That day, Zhou Gui was working the fields. Coincidentally, Xiao Jingshan was there also.

Tilling the soil was an extremely physical task. Xiao Jingshan was so hot that he took off his sweat soaked clothes. His skin was tanned and muscular back, arms and whole body were covered in hot sweat as if he’d just had an intense fucking session outdoors1.

Zhou Gui put his head down and worked. He picked a fight with Xiao Jingshan occasionally but was ignored.

At midday, the sun was boiling. All the working hanzi drank cold tea and ate their lunch under the shade of the tree.

Changgeng came over carrying a little basket. Zhou Gui was full of joy but Changgeng did not look at him and took out a small handkerchief to wipe Xiao Jingshan’s sweat. Zhou Gui was full of jealousy and viciously chomped on his flatbread. His head that was filled with displeasure was suddenly struck by something. Staring at it, it turned out it was a rice ball wrapped in lotus leaves.

The person who threw the rice ball was Zhou Gui’s childhood arch-rival, the youngest son of the village chief, Zhao Chuan!

At the mention of Zhao Chuan, Zhou Gui’s teeth itched.

This Zhao Chuan relied on the fact that he was the village chief’s youngest son and ran amok in the village. When they were younger, he even bullied Changgeng. Each time he specially roasted a fish to give to Changgeng to eat, Zhao Chuan would steal it. He would complain how terrible it tasted while completely demolishing it.

When he climbed up trees to gather birds eggs, Zhao Chuan would also steal them. Zhao Chuan liked to frighten him with a sling shot, and even said that Changgeng was an idiot and questioned what could be so fun about playing with him.

Zhou Gui was a bit afraid of Zhao Chuan because Zhao Chuan was a skilled fighter.

When he was little and being bullied by Er Niu2, Zhao Chuan rushed over and knocked out Er Niu’s front teeth and because of this was punished to kneel for 6 hours by the village chief. His knees were frozen and swollen from kneeling in the middle of winter.

When they were still little, they still fooled around together, but after growing up, they gradually became distant.

Zhao Chuan sat under the tree shade next to him. The two didn’t say anything. Zhou Gui stared at Changgeng, sighed and picked up his rice ball. When he unwrapped it and took a bite, hmmm…? There was actually meat inside!

He hadn’t thought that Zhao family’s meals would be so good that there would even be meat inside rice balls. Zhou Gui couldn’t resist it and took a peek at Zhao Chuan’s rice ball. Originally he thought that his one would have meat as well, but unexpectedly there was none inside his his rice ball, only a sour preserved plum.

“What’s so good about Ye Changgeng?’ Zhao Chuan finished his rice ball and slowly said. He looked at him from the corner of his eye. His side profile was honestly incredibly handsome but he had never married in all these years saying that he wasn’t interested and made the village chief anxious to death.

Hearing Zhao Chuan speak poorly of his beloved, Zhou Gui angrily puffed his cheeks up, “I won’t let you speak ill of Changgeng!”

“I’m saying it, so what? Are you able to beat me up?” Zhao Chuan laughed heatedly. Seeing Zhou Gui’s departing figure carrying his plow, he rested his chin as if deep in thought, “I’m more interesting than that idiot, why don’t you look at me?”

Day after day went by, year after year passed, it was not even known how many exquisite flowers in dreams already scattered.

After Changgeng moved to Zhenshang, he gave birth to two fat little ones. When Zhou Gui heard this good news from the other villagers his heart was dismayed. All these years he had not married. His older brother got the house and land while he only inherited a little yellow cow.

At night, when he was drinking wine to relieve his melancholy, Zhao Chuan came over to see him with roast chicken in hand.

He was drunk, it was unavoidable for him to mock his arch rival upon seeing him. He asked Zhou Chuan the reason why he had not married in all these years. Hanzi his age usually already had who knows how many kids.

Zhao Chuan superficially smiled looking at him, the light in his pupils crystal clear. “The reason that I am unmarried, do you actually not know?”

Zhou Gui almost choked to death with a red face when he heard these words. He only unfathomably felt something seemed to be rising from the bottom of his heart.

In the end, who was it that kissed who first, who was it that took whose clothes off first, Zhou Gui already forgot. He only felt that he had tasted heaven. Other than Zhao Chuan’s stick being too big and nearly killing him, his first night could still be considered quite beautiful.

However, two hanzi and hanzi together…in the end was still against normal human relations.

After that night, Zhou Gui didn’t dare to see Zhao Chuan again. He only treated it like a spring dream3. Whenever Zhao Chuan appeared at an occasion, Zhou Gui would find an excuse to leave. He restrained himself from thinking about Zhao Chuan. He was obviously his childhood arch-rival, how could this kind of relations have happened. Zhou Gui did not know, and also restrained himself from wildly thinking.

He pretended that the incident never happened. As long as he didn’t open his mouth, Zhao Chuan would not mention it. As before, they were old rivals that did not see eye to eye.

Day after day went by, year after year passed, it was said that Xiao Jingshan’s little kid was already old enough to buy soy sauce.

By Zhou Gui’s side, was only an old yellow cow.

Zhou Gui was 40 years old, Zhao Chuan was also 40. As before, neither were married. When outsiders asked for the reason, Zhou Gui would say the person in his heart was unwilling to marry him. As for Zhao Chuan, he would stare at Zhou Gui, in his heart there was also already someone.

One day, a long time later, after the sunset rays dissipated, the black night set in.

Zhou Gui pulled on his old yellow cow carrying a tattered cloth bundle on his back. He knocked on Zhao Chuan’s front door and stammered that he was going to Zhenshang to look for work. You have no ties and I have no burdens, how about going together?

Zhao Chuan’s lips raised in a smile, like a brilliant dazzling sun. He was still young and carefree as before.

The sky descended into night. The familiar vast land opened into the beyond. Hanzi and a cow gradually went into the distance, they shuffled along into the pitch black night. Under the sparse moonlight, they walked hand in hand
