I shook the red velvet pouch up and down, out of which seventeen golden coins fell. The sound of the coins clattering on the counter echoed in my head as I looked into the dark, soil-coloured eyes of the guard in front of me. He lifted his chin, revealing a small mole in his neck, and ran his index finger gently over the spot.
"Do you see this mole, ma'am?" he asked me in a deep, soft voice before withdrawing his finger.
I ran my eyes over the spot one more time. Of course, I knew what it meant, I'd been here countless times.
"This is my boss's sign, I can't let you in here unless you can prove your identity," he continued.
I slowly rolled up the sleeve on my left arm, where the scar lit up.
The scar which kept the whole universe in balance.
The scar I wanted to get rid of.The man's eyes lit up, he looked at me in fear. "I'm very sorry, you can come in." He bowed deeply as I gently opened the door to the throne room.
And there, on the iron throne, surrounded by purple smoke, she sat.
The owner of existence.
With every step I took closer to the throne, I felt my feet get heavier. The concrete floor beneath my feet began to soften as I fell to the ground.
The last thing I saw before closing my eyes was a dark smile on her face, I knew exactly what was going to happen next.
-
Slowly but surely I opened my eyes and looked around the room. I sat on a purple velvet chair with golden edges, on the other side of the long dining table sat the owner.
She ran her eyes over my clothes and sat perfectly still when she saw the golden pin in my black hair.
I wore a long black dress that hit my toes, with a piece of lace on each sleeve.
The owner was now looking straight at me in my dark, almost black eyes. "Where did that hairpin come from?" she asked anxiously.
Only now did I notice what she was wearing, a black dress with a cloak of dark gems.
I grabbed the pin from my hair, causing my black waves to fall on my shoulders. "This one, oh... just..." I studied the pin as I slowly twirled it in my finger. "Inherited from my mother."
She looked at me fiercely. "Aliyah, why are you here?"
I dropped the pin on the table and looked at her. "The same as usual. I want to know how to find Felix."
Her gaze was still as fierce as before. "I already told you, I'm not going to help you with that."
I lowered my head and smirked. "Not even for this hairpin? I heard you were just looking for one, and this one happens to belong to your dead friend you weren't allowed to save."
She let out a deep sigh. "Listen, if you tell anyone about this, I'll be sure to get you struck by lightning."
I chuckled. "Don't worry, I know you rule over the universe, so I won't get involved with things like thunder."
She opened her hand, the hairpin darting away from its place and into her palm. ''We have a deal, then.''
We stared at each other in silence for a while, before she continued. ''He is still looking for a job, I'll make sure he comes for an interview at the zoo, I promise you will recognise him.''
I smirked. ''Then I will leave now, and hopefully, we'll never see each other again.''
I disappeared into purple smoke and landed in my office at the zoo, where I was the director.
''See you soon, Felix.''
