The Last Time I Checked

I am told many things.

What I am and what I will be.

But why is it that I can't answer?

The last time I checked,

I knew myself to be a woman.

A daughter, a sister, a friend.

The last time I checked,

I have been given more privilege in my life than I know to be grateful for.

The last time I checked,

My identity should not determine how you treat me.

Neither should my age or experience.

The last time I checked,

I should not have to be shunned for the people I choose to love.

The last time I checked,

I had paths waiting for me,

And it was only up to me if I followed them.
