I remember when I was smaller, I thought the expansive property of Carnage Hill was so massive, like it was its own world. Tucked away from preying mortal eyes, it sort of still is. Except now I stand taller, allowing me to see where the property lines lay, and I am no longer a little girl filled with childlike wonder. The beast was sure to devour her and left in its place a weapon of mass destruction.
You can cut the tension with a knife as the Rover comes to a slow, rolling stop, before the main Estate. The building is generations old and made entirely of stone. Torrent like towers flesh out the east and west wing, balancing the larger center tower. Five stories and clearly the largest building on the property. . . because all the Reaper pack members had once lived here.
We were like one huge family. . . a happy family.
I pause to open my door as two wispy figures round the corner of the massive building on the west end, where I knew deep down was the entrance to the kitchen. The two haunting shapes circle each other and bounced with the same energy of children playing, something pounds against the inside of my skull and I clench my eyes shut with a shaky inhale, as a painful memory tries to resurface. It's not real. It's not real.
It's. Not. Real. I exhale slowly gaining control of my composure again.
"Of course, it's not." Raze's voice breaks the trance, that the past pulled me in.
Blinking at him I mull over his words. Did I say that aloud?
"It's ok." He whispers, "I've got you sis." he reassures with a squeeze of my hand. I give him a small smile in responds.
My eyes find mother and Emily at the entrance of the mansion, their conversation pauses as mothers right hand comes up and she points at something by the front door. Its a camera. Right. We came here with a plan. Come on get your shit together rainy, I scold myself. I steel my nerves and shove my memories and emotions in a little mental box like father taught me.
Glancing around I see that Raze has gotten out and is rounding the front of the Rover. I feel the prickling sensation that eyes are boring into me as he opens my door.
"Someone's watching." I barely whisper as he holds out his hand to help me out of the vehicle.
"Can you tell where?" He murmurs while leaning towards me as he presses his palm flat against the door until it clicks shut.
My head tilts back as I allow my senses to consume me, and my eyes flutter shut. The sounds echo around in my head as they travel through the air. Truly listening I focus on the faint steady heartbeat of someone nearby, they have a strong heart. I know its not mother or Emily as theirs are muted by the walls of the mansion, and Raze's is loud and clear right next to me. It's not until the person moves that I get a sense of direction, he shifts his weight and the distinct stiff sound of brush, not gravel or grass tells me that he is near the tree line. My eyes snap back open as the hairs on the back, left side of my shoulder rise and stay steadily risen. Found him.
