Chapter One
Running Towards Nowhere
"Oh my goodness, why? Why? Why??" I yelled loudly as I ran out the door with my sweater half on and my boots falling off. I slammed the small red door of my small flat in Brooklyn heights. I looked over at my dying flowers and sighed, I could never keep anything alive could I?
"Hey mister matters, how are you?" I said as I ran past his small porch that was filled with live flowers and his art books piling higher than my height.
He just nodded and waved his paintbrush at me, which meant that he was in deep artist, inspired mode. I laughed and turned the corner of my street. Today I was taking the train I guess. My red hair was in a bun on top of my head because I didn't even have time to brush it, as usual. Some of its wavy curls were falling out and I tucked them behind my ear to get them out of my eyes as I ran. I finally made it to the subway and ran down the steps.
My floral skirt was so bright compared to everyone on the train they all have on black or gray business suits. I laughed to myself as I tapped my foot suddenly very aware of the fact that I was more then late, I was dead.
Once I got to the office building of Coopers fashion magazine I ran past the security guard shouting that I was dead and late.
I walked in just as my boss was getting some coffee from the break room. I breathed a sigh of relief, she was here late too she always has her coffee the second she walks in her.
"Good morning Ruby" she said with her back turned away from me.
She must have eyes in the back of her head, I thought. "Morning June" I replied with fake cheeriness.
She nodded and then walked down the hall toward her office. I sighed and walked the opposite way to my small desk by the window near the lobby. I sat down and looked at all the messages I had already missed. This job seriously stinks, I thought bitterly.
As I read through message after message I stopped short spotting a call for Ruby Clemmings.
"Why would anyone call me here" I thought to myself.
The name was Gilbert Jackson. I'd never heard of a Gilbert Jackson in my whole life.
"Jessica what did the man Gilbert Jackson have to say when he called" I called out to the other receptionist.
"Umm...well I kind of didn't pay attention to that call cause he was like all old and stuff, he didn't sound hot at all!" She said with her nasally voice.
I rolled my eyes and muttered a "well thanks then".
There was a number under the name but I decided I could just call it later.
I stared out the window at the city, all the people running around and cars zipping back and forth.
"Even though everyone is moving so fast, why do I feel like my life is at an all time slow."? I thought to myself bitterly.
"Ruby, I need you, we're having a meeting and there is no coffee. Go to Roberto's and I need you to get an order of Five coffees" June said loudly from the conference room.
I sighed and got up from my desk, pulling down my skirt I grabbed my purse and headed out of the office.
As I walked to the coffee shop my phone rang, " Give me what I want, I want to leave me behind" Kids of 88 song tucan blasted from my purse.
"Hello Ruby at your service" I said into the phone.
"Babe, Its Tyler." My boyfriend said softly.
