Love Always Lives On

When I came to I was back in the attic. The dread of confinement came over me tenfold, it made me literally vomit onto to the floor. Though it was not pitch dark, it took my eyes a moment to adjust to the lack of light. Underneath me, old bodies had long since turned to dust, and the newest ones were stuck in various stages of rot. I wanted to gag. The stench of death clung onto me like a stubborn lint on wool.

Bolting up, I ran to where the door once was, but now there was none. There was no window, no way to escape! I was trapped in this monstrous house by some entity who wanted me dead.

Lila... I thought. My darling, I never thought things would end this way, but here I am in your dream house, which has become my nightmare.

Out of the shadows, the woman appeared. Her dress looked like it had gone through rose bushes, and thorns had ripped it here and there. Her hair was messy, and there were bloodstains around her lips.

"Roger," she whispered and reached for me.

Backing towards the wall, I stumbled over old bones and nearly fell. "Getaway!" I yelled and held up my arms to keep her away.

"Roger, my darling. I only wanted to love you." The sound of hissing came over me as she stepped closer.

I shook my head. When I felt the wall behind me, I flinched. "I don't know who or what you are...."

"I am Jezebel," she cut me off. "And this is my house." Gesturing to everything around us, she smiled a toothy grin.

But this is my house. I thought.

I bought it for Lila because she loved it so much. But this demon could have it as long as I could leave. "Take back the damn house then and let me go."

"You don't understand, Roger. You came here willingly. You entered my garden and destroyed my roses. You stayed because you wanted to be here..." pausing, she gestured to the skeletons, "as they did. All twenty-nine men before you." She took a small step closer then leaned her face to me. "I loved them as I will love you, but first Roger, first you must die."

When she lunged at me, I gasped and looked up. I thought I saw Lila as an angel with beautiful white feathers glistening and fluttering.

"My love," I croaked.

Above me, the roof began to tremble, then shatter and fall around us. Sunlight found its way into the haunted house, tendrils of light touched the vampire, and she began to burn.

"I am here, my love," said the woman, oblivious to the fire consuming her.

I saw Lila smiling at me from the garden. Her sweet face beckoned to me, and her arms stretched wide open. I realized that I didn't fear death as long as I could be with the woman I loved forever. Even death would no longer be able to separate us anymore.

Lila. We can finally be together. A smile tugged at the grimace I held on to before due to the pain.

The last thing I remembered before everything went dark was her already burning hands around my waist. She was already evaporating into thin air. Her fangs dug into my neck, and she bled me dry until nothing but my bones were left of me.

In the garden, a single rose blossomed and grew. It arched toward the sun, which turned it into a brilliant red.
