Prologue
It was obviously a dream. Where else could she be walking on a hazy bridge unable to see the bottom, violet fog swirling around her, a wispy dress, both modest and pretty, draped on her body?
Then again, what kind of dream automatically asserted itself as a dream? Her mind began to fog up as thick as her surroundings and she shook it. No. She was here for a reason.
As she continued down the mystical bridge, cold beneath her bare feet, she finally reached the end. The bridge was made of glass or perhaps even diamond as it spread its coolness through her body. Upon reaching the end, she saw a light.
A light that was too bright yet not bright enough, but was pure and good. It was also hiding something. Somewhere deep down inside her, she knew that it was something that her human mind just couldn't comprehend. In that same deep down place she could sense a form or a face, emotions or rather - a lack of.
"You dwell on the wrong things, human."
The voice was inside her yet echoed around her too. She hadn't heard it with her ears but with her mind and it was the most disconcerting feeling.
"He said to hear you out, that perhaps what you want is not exactly what you think you want. So before it is granted, do you want to speak?"
Ava lifted her head and stared at the light, at where she thought a head would be. "I know what I want. I haven't changed my mind."
A feeling washed over her and she thought she understood what it was asking.
"You are willing to give all that up?"
She nodded. "Will he be happy?"
She couldn't see anything in the light but she thought that if she could, she'd see the being cock its head. "Humans are so strange. You worry more about that than your own happiness. What if you are not happy?"
"Will he be alive and happy?" she asked again.
"He will have a different path. You have no need to worry after that."
It wasn't an answer but anything different would be better.
"Then I want that," she bit out, determination strong in her voice.
The light shifted. "You do know that once it is over, you will remember nothing. It will be like it never happened."
She felt hysterical laughter bubbling up inside of her. What was this? Terms and conditions apply? Instead of saying anything, though the being probably already knew her thoughts, she said, "Yes, that does make sense."
There was an ominous silence and she knew that she was probably imagining it, it and the whole thing, but the fog seemed to thicken around her.
"If you are sure."
Her spine stiffened. "I've never been surer."
The being seemed to laugh, if it even knew what amusement was. "You forget that we know you."
Another silence and she felt like she was suffocating, her eyes straining to see anything around her even though the light remained strong and true.
"Will it hurt?" For the first time, her voice wavered. If it would, it wouldn't change her mind. She just needed to know.
The being's countenance softened. She sensed it perhaps in the light or in the presence itself and then an invisible hand, gentle and kind, touched her eyes until they fell shut. "It will be like falling asleep."
