"Train you in fighting magic! I mean, I'm not saying no, but why? You've never complained about the rules the crown had set on you before." Luna asked, looking at me in complete shock at the question.
"I want to learn how to protect myself. The guards don't always watch mine and everyone else's moves, as we learned from the coronation. What if that blast would've hit anywhere else? I need to learn how to protect myself from things like that." I replied grimly, looking at my scar in the mirror.
They walked out of the room after that, seeming to need to either cool off or contemplate the decision. I was fine with either one, since I needed to do the same thing.
"Why did you say that," I spoke to the now empty bathroom,"you know you can't learn magic for fighting purposes. Dad would kill me, or worse, ban me from going into town or seeing Luna."
Tears quietly streamed down my cheeks, my brain spiraling with what could happen if I went through. I knew I had a solid reason as to why, but I also knew the consequences if I got caught. Even asking was very heat of the moment, and dangerous in its own right. If Luna told anyone that I even asked, those same consequences could still go into effect. Nova had by then woken up and was on top of my head, trying to calm me down. I wiped the still free flowing tears from my eyes and grabbed her down, petting her. It stayed like that for a small bit before I had calmed down enough to go back into the bedroom, where Luna was just walking back in.
"I'll teach you magic, if that's truly what you want; it'd be rude to say no to a royal. Come on!" They spoke quietly, and grabbed both my hands and pulled me through the door to outside the bedroom before letting go of one hand and pulling me through the hallways and down the stairs, Nova and Ash following close behind. We got down to the first floor hallway and they pulled me back out the doors and into the forest on the back side of the castle. Nova stopped when we did and swirled around me.
"Alright,"Luna stated, a grin on their face,"before you start practicing with a staff, you need to learn how to cast magic normally, like this."
They summoned an upwards blast of water that they quickly got rid of, which was her specialty. I summoned a small ball of light and smiled, they just sighed.
"You need to focus on what you want the light to do, maybe try to summon a beam of it?" they suggested, moving to the side of me.
"It wouldn't hurt to try." I sighed while preparing to try and summon a beam.
I put as much focus as I could and summoned a decent sized beam of light, but I could also feel that something else was in the blast as I sent it flying. It flew near a tree and burst into sparkles, but also lit the tree on fire. Luna rushed back over to me, putting out the fire on the way.
"What was that!?" they cried, genuinely surprised.
"I did what you asked. If you mean about the fire, I don't know what happened." I replied back, still slightly in shock about the whole ordeal.
"I think that's enough training for one day. The sun's about to come up anyway."
"Yeah, I guess."
We went back inside and to my room, and I finally noticed how the sun was rising. I don't think I had ever seen it rise before that day. The way all of the colors blended together to bring light to the world, it was beautiful.
"Do you think we can go into town today? I want to buy you a staff. That was a large display of power." Luna asked me, staring out the bedroom window but looking back for a quick second to look at me.
"Yeah, I don't see the harm in that. I'll just change into some better clothes and then we can go."
I changed into some normal clothes, jeans with a grey top. I would usually also have a jacket with a hood, but I looked different enough with my hair that no one would recognize me anyway. Nova and Ash went back to sleep, mentally telling us that it would be fine if they didn't go along with us. We made our descent down the stairs for what seemed like the hundredth time over the last couple of days and snuck out the back entrance of the castle, into the forest, and from there we made our way around the forest into the town. We had done this a lot, being attributed to the fact we had more free time without being bothered than we knew what to do with. They were almost dates, but I wish they were actual dates. I've known that I've liked them for about two years now, I think. One of the main problems with that though is that I don't even know if they're into girls, well girls and enbies, since I am partly both. I would change my name to try and fit my pronouns, but nothing ever seems to fit and my reputation would be ruined. I wish that I could be myself without causing the royal structure to collapse in on me, but it'll never be that way. After a while we arrive in town, making a bee line over to the wand shop where Luna had gotten theirs. They pushed open the door and walked in, with me following closely behind. The door closes with a ding of the bell on top, and who I could only assume was the store owner came rushing over.
