Peeta’s POV:
“Ms. Everdeen… I thought we had agreed not to lie to each other.” I hear Snow grumble at Katniss. I watch as a fierce smirk on Katniss’ face slowly dissipates, and she starts to lower her raised and loaded bow. “We did.” She says, her voice broken. “But what would you say if I had lied then?” The President starts to laugh, but his laughs are interrupted by coughs, and he raises his only free hand up to his mouth with an already bloodied handkerchief. When he takes it away, I notice it’s a bit more bloodied than before.
Come on, Katniss. Shoot him!
She’s staring at the floor, her eyes darting from tile to tile, and then suddenly looks up at me. I tilt my head at the direction of Snow and widen my eyes a little to indicate that she should put her attention back on her prime target.
She tilts her head back at Snow, and raises her bow. Faster than I can process in my head, her arrow is flying through the air. There we go, Katniss. Now we can finally see our mutual enemy dead…. Wait.
Why is her arrow going upwards? My mind is darting so many different places within the few seconds the arrow is in the air.
She’s not shooting Snow, is she?
SHES NOT SHOOTING SNOW!
Wait, where is she going with this…
My thoughts are cut off when I see the arrow plunge into someone’s heart, but something’s wrong. It’s not Snow’s.
Suddenly, President Coin tumbles down the hundreds of flights of stairs that just so happened to be below where she was standing. Dead.
There’s an overall shriek from the crowd of 13 citizens, and I feel my own jaw drop open.
She did not just…. No.
Katniss only then seems to register what she’s done, and her eyes are darting around the room again, and she looks at me for a look of sympathy, but apparently all my face registers to her is shock because she looks as if she’s about to cry.
President Snow’s laughter is the only sound filling the main hallway, but then his laughs are cut off again, and thick red blood starts to spew from his mouth before the selected few Peacekeepers that were kept alive solely for this purpose block him from my view.
A few soldiers from 13 grab Katniss by the arm, and one locks handcuffs on her, her hands forced around her back. She starts yelling in protest. “No… No! Let go of me! Let go of me!”
The people of District 13 are hysterical. Katniss starts calling out for Gale as they drag her away towards the hovercraft launch area. I’m a bit disappointed that she didn’t call out for me, but then I remember why I’m even wearing the white 13 hospital gown that I’m wearing, and realize that I need to rebuild her trust.
I can’t help myself. I start following the guards. Where are they taking her? Suddenly I hear myself yelling her name. “Katniss! Katniss!” As I begin to pick up speed to run after her, I feel someone’s hand on my arm. “Peeta…” Haymitch is shaking his head. “Don’t.”
I don’t want to protest. Haymitch is my mentor. He’s the reason why both Katniss and I are even alive today. So I start to relax a little when he says this. Then it hits me.
