a little more than friends

The Kingdom of Darkness wasn't that big. Small enough that you could see the Fountain rising up from the Castle Town pretty much everywhere. The Castle Town was home to the members of the Royal Family, and most citizens of the Kingdom. Well, ok. There was only one member of the Royal Family. The Prince of Darkness, Ralsei. Stuck as prince forever due to both of his parents disappearing one day. Not dead, not missing. They simply faded out of existence. How did you know all this? Well, having one parent working on the Royal Staff certainly did help. Secrets aren't kept forever. That's also how you came to know Ralsei, and in time, become his best friend.

Today was special. You were on a trip to Castle Town to see Ralsei. Your parents were out for the weekend, so you left a note and took advantage of the time. Your little village was less than a 2 hours walk from Castle Town, so you visited often. But you had been busy the last couple weeks, and couldn't make it. You had been missing Ralsei very fiercely. Your parents had been gone for longer and longer periods of time, and it was desperately lonely in your village. You didn't really have any friends who parents weren't on the Royal Staff. And there wasn't much need for Royal Staff when there was just one Royal. Ralsei took care of himself now.

But it wasn't just the average loneliness that you felt. You started getting nervous. Anxious, even. You began to hesitate when writing letters to Ralsei. You started to consider your words very carefully, and upon sending the letters, you would torture yourself over every possible outcome of the letters. You started to believe that Ralsei hated you. When he added a smiley face to one of his response letters, you told yourself it was because you simply weren't worth the words. Now, of course, you knew this wasn't true. But your mind kept thinking it.

But there was another reason you were going to Castle Town. One you wouldn't admit to yourself, much less Ralsei. You found yourself daydreaming about him. You had a picture of him in your room from one of the last times you hung out, and you stared at it for hours. You felt an infatuation growing for the fluffy boy. But right now, what you needed the most, was one of his hugs. Your parents loved you. Their hugs were great. But Ralsei's hugs blew everything else out of the water. Nuzzling into the crook of his neck and burying your face into his scarf. Drawing in his scent. Whatever kind of fruit-scented body wash (fur wash?) he used, it smelled amazing. You were always careful to walk the razor-edge between a friendly hug and one that lasted a bit too long. Just thinking about these things made you blush intensely. You stuffed those feelings down, and got going on your trip.

Needless to say, you were tired. Even a walk through serene, dark countryside was enough to make you tired. Castle Town was as beautiful as ever. The deep blue and black castle loomed gracefully over the city. The streets bustled with monsters of all shapes and sized, but you really only cared about one of them. You approached the castle, and knocked on it's great door . It made a deep, echoing noise throughout the stone brick courtyard. It began to slowly creak open, and a familiar face emerged from the dark.

Two stubby pink horns adorned a white, fluffy head with long floppy ears. He had a kind face, with soft edges. You looked into his deep pink eyes in the millisecond before he wrapped his arms around you in a hug. His green robe draped itself around your body, and you returned the hug. He was warm, and incredibly soft. You cuddled your face into his scarf, and held it for maybe a bit too long.

"Hi!" He said excitedly.

"H-hey Ralsei." Your voice felt awkward, but he didn't seem to notice.

"How's it going?" He asked, leading you into the main room of the castle. Like every room in the castle, it had high ceiling and dark cobalt cobblestones. It was all carpeted with a thick black carpet which felt soft underfoot. It wasn't that big, all things considered. It was more of a cauldron room than anything else. You had once joked that it was a storage room for doors.
