This is a follow up to Piston Cup, taking place the day after.
first thing in the morning, Doc gets the two up for breakfast, since its included with his room they bring it up to them. he wasn't sure what the two would eat, but given what they'd already told him, he was sure they wouldn't be too picky. he's not wrong. there's a couple things Monty refuses to eat, like gravy or the toast they burnt slightly, but neither of them really make a fuss. Macks already changed back into his suit but Monty is still running around in the shirt Doc let him borrow.
"so where is it you're taking us?" Lightning ask, looking up at him. Docs sitting on the couch eating his own while Lightning sits on the floor watching some cartoon or other, and Mack sits across them at an angle he can keep an eye on them both incase Doc suddenly has a change of heart of something. Mack looks over at him as well, curious.
"Radiator Springs, Arizona. it's about an 8 hour drive from here. we'll take Route 66 and it'll lead us straight there. once we get there, we'll get you guys set up in the motel and settled. I'll give you a few days to settle then we'll start on a work out schedule." Doc assures, looking at Lightning. "but first I wanna get you out in the Butte and see what you can do." Doc adds. Lightning looks over at Mack, waiting for the older mans voice on the matter.
"alright, that sounds fair." Mack nods.
"I've got some friends who'll take care of your car, get it all fixed up and everything, just a double check to make sure its good." Doc assures, looking at Lightning.
"I appreciate that, but no one works on my car except me. that 95 is all I have and I won't let someone mess it up. I work on it." Lightning says firmly. it wavers a little when Doc looks at him and Mack tenses up, like he's ready to pounce on Doc should he upset or attack the younger man.
"thats all well and dandy kid, but you're not a one man team anymore and my team does a good job. they're not going to hurt your car. they work on my Hornet from time to time." Doc replies. Monty seems hesitant, looking at Mack. Docs quickly realizing this kid really depends on Mack and himself. he's never had someone else he could depend on. he also realizes that it seems like this is all Macks choice, like the kids unsure he actually wants to trust Doc and the two have some sort of back up plan in case this all goes bad and Lightning wants to make sure Macks okay with it. Macks quiet for a few minutes, he seems to be thinking, before looking over at Lightning.
"we can give it a shot boss. anything they mess up you know you can fix." Mack assures. Doc looks back over at Lightning and he nods a little.
"okay I guess." he mutters, looking back at the tv. Doc frowns, if he wants the kid to trust him, he's going to have to get Macks trust first.
"after we're done here I'll take you guys to get your semi. do you guys have clothes in there you can wear?" Doc ask.
"yeah. I just did laundry a few days ago so we've got a couple outfits." Mack says. Lightning gets up and wonders off into the bathroom.
"you do everything for the kid?" Doc asks curiously.
"all the domestic crap. he doesn't know how to do a lot of things, but he knows cars. he works on them and I do other things." Mack shrugs. Doc nods.
"how exactly did you two meet?" Doc asks, looking over. Mack frowns.
"he was 14 and had been a run away for like two months or so. I pulled up to a truck stop and these big guys were dragging him out of the store kicking and screaming. there was two of them or maybe three, carrying this kid out and beating the fuck out of him. I stepped in and beat the guys until they ran off." Mack mutters. "when I finally got him to talk to me I could hear the kids stomach trying to eat itself. they broke his nose and his arm, wanna know why?" Mack ask.
