I waved back at her awkwardly standing frozen in place. I hoped she would just wave and leave. To my horror, she started walking towards me. Shit.
"Hey there, Bethany. What have you been doing?" She asked in a friendly, calm manner.
" I..I..." I stammered. What do I tell her? Something like ...Hello, teacher. I was doing nothing special. Just watching Avengers on the TV with volume so high that made me hear an earful from my mother and then I was grooving to Taylor Swift's 'Shake it off'.
Thankfully, I didn't have to say all that because, hah, she didn't give me a chance to speak. Instead she continued, "Judging from looks, you're going to the grocery?"
I nodded.
"Great. I was heading there too." She said. My horror grew. This was double shit. Before I could speak a word, she grabbed my free hand and we started walking together like we were best friends meeting after a long time. What the hell was wrong with her? I went into the shop with her and started adding all things to my cart while she did her own shopping. I still could shake the feeling that something was wrong with my teacher. First, she tried to dig into my life by asking me awkward question that might not seem so awkward from the outside. Did it? Then she tried to invite me to her place and then she's suddenly acting like my comrade. My brain was starting to weird assumptions by the time I was done shopping.
Is she some underground agent who's trying to lure me into dark hands? Or is she some monster, trying to take me to her house and make soup out of me for Christmas? Is she some spy? A demon? Anything?
I was going to have to shut down my brain someday to stop it from butting in into everything. Hah, just kidding. How am I going to do all stuff then?
"Are you done?" A voice startled me from behind. I turned to see her face beaming under the store lights.
"Uh, yeah. I was just going to the counter."
I paid the bill and turned to leave. But instead, I bumped into something hard. Or should I say someone.
"Sorry!" the guy and I said at the same time.
"It's okay." We said in unison again and he laughed. Was I supposed to laugh too? I didn't.
"I was searching for my mom and I was on a call so I wasn't looking where I was going. Sorry again." He just used 'I' four times in one sentence.
"Okay." I said and turned to leave before my teacher could find me. Just before I stepped out, I caught a glimpse of Mrs. Williams talking to the guy I just bumped into. I rushed out of there, mentally thanking the guy for keeping her busy. I hurried back home and Momma immediately started making cake. I tasted the batter and it was yummy. I couldn't wait for her to finish baking. Guess I didn't mention that I love chocolate more than ice cream. Okay, that was a lie. I can't choose between chocolate and ice cream. You could give me chocolate flavored ice cream maybe? My mouth watered at the thought itself. I watched TV while she baked and didn't realize when I fell asleep.
"Aaghh!!!" I screamed and woke up in shock when I felt water splash all over my face and rubbed my eyes and face to see my brother's grinning face, showing his full set of thirty-two teeth.
"Wakey wakey, you sleepyhead. Have you got nothing else to do?" He asked as he set down his big bag on the couch
"Aaaahh!!!" I screamed again and jumped out of the sofa, where I had been sleeping, to throw my arms around him and he clutched me tight. God, I was so happy to see my brother after more than a whole year. So happy that I didn't mind him being the third person asking the same question on the same day. On any ordinary basis, I would have yelled at him provided my short temper.
"For heaven's sake! Will you stop screaming?" I heard Momma call out from the kitchen. I stopped.
"Thank you, Bethany Claire, for sparing my ears the screaming. I missed you, baby sis."
"Hey! I'm not a baby anymore. By the way, I missed you too, big brother."
"Hah. Trust me, sis, I know you missed your big brother." he winked at me. I rolled my eyes at that. He was being annoying again, but did I mention I missed him being annoying too? Hah.
"So Garry, how many days do you have this time?" Momma asked coming out of the kitchen.
"Three months."
I squealed in delight and Momma stared at him in shock. I almost laughed at her expression.
"Really? Like whole three months?"
"Mhmm."
"How come? It's usually a month or hardly two." I asked. I was really confused.
"I dunno girl. They just let it slip this time. Isn't it good news anyway?"
"Of course not! Who would want an annoying brat around for whole three months?"
Yes, sarcasm dripped from what I just told him.
"Ouch!" he clutched his heart as if that really hurt him and I rolled my eyes again. Momma chuckled and went back into the kitchen only to watch her reappear with a well decorated chocolate cake. It was covered in a layer of chocolate and rings of golden chocolate covered one of its edges. I was suddenly hungry. Yum.
"Thanks, mom." I said as I started to rub my hands together in greed just like a kid.
"Don't you dare touch it before I get plates and forks! You means you both. Get it?" Momma told in her oh-so-scary-tone. I giggled and looked at Garry who was trying to hold back his fit of laughter. As soon as she disappeared into the kitchen, I removed one of the rings and put it in my mouth. There were many, so Momma probably wouldn't notice if one was missing, would she? My brother chuckled beside me and did the same and we both laughed silently, but stopped as soon as Momma entered the room. She looked at the cake then narrowed her eyes at us. We both shrugged at the same time then looked at each other. A moment of silence passed before it was broken when both of us burst out laughing. Momma sighed slightly and smiled at us. Anyone could tell we were one happy family and i couldn't help smiling at the fact. We cut the cake and devoured it with little bit of cream fighting. Yes, little bit of cream fighting, that ended in both of our faces covered in chocolate.
"Enough you both!" Momma raised her hand stopping our giggles and chuckles as he tried to tickle my sides. She gathered the plates and went to put them in the sink. I carried the leftover cake to the kitchen and put it inside the refrigerator. I followed Garry upstairs into his room. When he turned to look at me I grinned at him.
"What?" He asked. I smacked myself mentally.
"Aren't you forgetting something?" I asked as I took out my phone from my pocket. He gave me a huh? really? look.
I showed him a screenshot of one of our conversations over the phone and his expression after reading that was priceless. I immediately took a picture of him. Hah, I was going to put this picture in a frame and gift him on his birthday.
"What the hell?! You have screenshots of that thing? Like, seriously, Beth?"
I was grinning from ear to ear and he shook his head.
"C'mon, tell me more about her." I urged as I sat down on his bed and folded my legs under me.
"There's nothing like that. Forget that convo and please delete those screenshots and the picture you just took. And we're not talking about this again. AND you are going out of here now."
"Chill. That's a whole lot of ands to be used in one sentence and I'm not going out until you give me at least something about her." He narrowed his eyes at me before dragging me out of the room. Yes, he actually had to drag me out of his room. He shut the door behind me. I made a face at the door. Garry was going to tell me as soon as he was ready. I knew he'd tell me before anyone. That was so like my brother. I giggled at the thought and went into my room to resume my research on my assignment topics.
