When Darkness Falls

In The River

"This is hopeless" Billie whispered to Shawn as the all sat by the side of a river gathering their strength and their thoughts

They had been walking for hours through the thick forest in nothing but their uniform shorts and T-shirt's, their feet bare and by now covered in cuts and grazes

"We could be going around in circles for all we know and as for this 'little mountain' how do we even know it exists?!" Billie used a twig to draw shapes in the dirt as their mind struggled to make sense of everything that had happened over the course of the last 24 hours

"What else are we supposed to do? Just sit here and hope someone has a change of heart and comes to take us home?!"

"I don't know what we're supposed to do, fuck Shawn, this time yesterday all I had on my mind was getting that test paper for you and earning myself some money and now today..."

"It's fucked up" Shawn agreed as he picked up a rock and threw it into the fast flowing water

"Completely"

"I'm hungry" whined Camila and Shawn dramatically rolled his eyes

"Do you ever stop complaining? You're too hot, you're too tired, you're hungry"

"I bet I could give you something to fill you up" Said Noah with a wink and as Camila giggled, Shawn pushed himself to his feet

"Instead of making us all want to puke with your vulgar pickup lines why don't you do something useful and find us something to eat?!"

"Well why don't you?! You're the one stomping ahead, trying to look like you know where you're going and what you're doing" Noah was now on his feet as the two men went toe to toe

"No I'm not, I'm just trying to be productive, I'm trying to somehow, find a way to get us home"

"And how's that going for you?"

"About as well as it's going for you trying to get Camila naked"

"Look I know you might be jealous but Camila and I are none of your goddamn business! Now why don't you and your  little girl-friend get up and find us a way out of this place!"

Noah was so annoyed he didn't even look where he was going as he turned and stomped away from Shawn but unfortunately he crashed straight into Camila who was sat by the side of the river and it was enough to cause her to lose her balance and fall in

Immediately she disappeared under the fast moving waters as the three others stood there in shock, waiting for her to reappear so they could pull her out but after a few seconds they realised that she wasn't coming back up of her own accord

"Camila?" Called Shawn as he started running along the side river bank "CAMILA?!" He yelled, his voice sounding panicked as he tore the black tank top from his body and then moved to the edge

"Shawn no!" Cried Billie, look at the speed the water's moving at, she's long gone"

"Imagine if she'd said that when you were stuck in that net! Imagine if she'd just left you there!"

"It's not the same Shawn..." Billies hand came to rest on his arm, she's gone, maybe if we run down stream we'll find her but jumping in there... we're only going to lose both of you"

"We aren't going to lose Camila" snapped Shawn as he took off running, Billie following as closely as they could "CAMILA!" Shawn yelled as he continued to run, his eyes searching the water for any sign of the stricken girl "MILA!!"

"Shawn!" Shouted Billie and he turned just enough to see them pointing into the water

"Mila!" He gasped as he skidded down the muddy river bank and then dived into the shallow water as the river slapped and then flowed into a deep pool.

The brunettes slim body lay tangled in the branches and the undergrowth at the side of the pool

"Shawn be careful!" Yelled Billie but Shawn was deaf to everything around him, as he swam to the other side of the pool grabbing hold of Camilas slim body and then swimming back with her, carrying her up the muddy bank and then laying her body down onto the grass

"Come on Mila speak to me!"

"Shawn she isn't breathing!" Cried Billie as they dropped to their knees and lowered their ear to Camilas lips

"MILA!!!" Shawn tilted Camilas head back as Billie began pressing hard on her chest and blowing air into her mouth "Come on Camila come on!!!"

As Billie continued fighting for Camilas life Noah loitered in the back ground, watching the scene unfold but unwilling to take any part in it

"If anything happens to her!" Shawn yelled, his finger jutting out towards Noah

"Still nothing!" Cried Billie as Shawn pushed up to his feet and began pacing, his eyes flitting towards Camila every now and then as he attempted to avoid what his mind was begging him to remember.

Running both hands through his hair he wanted to scream out, wanted to hit Noah and wanted to cry all at once but instead he just leant his back against the solid bark of a tree and allowed his mind to take him over and to take him back to the last time he saw Camila lying in front of him, only this time her cheeks were pink and her lips damp, her eyes had been sparkling as she whispered his name and then his mind collapsed as he recalled the way she had called his name in distress as he turned and ran
