So, here I am, officially one month out of school. I have my CV in hand, my fresh matric certificate stapled to the back. In as formal clothes as my high school closet allows me. Sitting in the passenger seat of my dads car, feeling dejected. You see, I had just come from my first interview, an interview I presumed would be a success, which it clearly was not.
"You can't win them all, baby girl" my dad said with a smile.
"I shouldn't have told them about my America plans" I huffed
"You have to play play open cards with them"
"Dad, it was a temp job, they didn't expect me to stay forever"
"You cannot do business like that, playing open cards and being truthful will help you with your future, trust me." with a smile he stopped at home and waited for me to unlock the front door before he pulled away.
This was clearly not what I had planned, you see, I have a list, the list to my perfect life. Some people have bucket lists, I have life plans. Mine goes like this:
1. Get a job a nursery school
2. Apply to Au Pair
3. Get accepted
4. Find the perfect family
5. Work in the USA
6. Work in Europe
7. Find a nice guy
8. Get married
9. Travel Europe together
10. Be happy
Yes, yes, I know, someone has been reading too many romance novels. But, why can't my life work out like that. Everyone else seem to have everything they want. My two best friends are backpacking through Europe, I wasn't invited. My boyfriend, well ex now, has found a internship at one or other big finance company. And me? At home, looking after my little sister and helping with her home school homework.
Laying in bed that night, I was feeling very down and low, with my box of chocolates and soppy romance novel, I was sure my life was over.
There was a soft knock at my door and my little sister came walking in. Erin, my very younger sister at twelve years my junior, always seemed to know when I was feeling down. She is a very special little girl, especially to me. She suffers from a condition called Cerebral Palsy, however she has it very mild. She is a great source of inspiration to me as she is like an overflowing fountain of positivity. Climbing onto my bed, she steals a few chocolates and snuggles up to me.
"What's wrong, sis?" she asked me
"I just expected things to go different"
"Different, why?"
"Well, I had plans," I explained "I just didn't expect to struggle"
"It was your first attempt. Maybe you must try harder and not just expect everything to happen overnight."
"Well, it seems to happen for everyone else overnight, why not for me?"
"How do you know?"
"How do you know it happened overnight?"
"Uhm, well, I assumed"
"We all have our own paths."
With hug good night, she jumped off my bed and left the room.
What she said really bothered me. Did I judge too quickly? I will never know. But, what I do know now, is that things work out differently for everyone.
