"Green light..."

I run as far as I can, adrenaline flooding my veins. "Red light." I lurch to a stop, heart racing. Sang-woo is right beside me. Everyone is holding their breaths, and I see a boy at the front of the crowd wobbling on his feet, unable to keep still.

"Player 324. Eliminated."

Poor guy. Eliminated already and it's only just begun.

A loud bang splits through the air. The boy collapses, falling unceremoniously to the ground. This makes my heart stagger in my chest. What the hell is he doing?

The robot turns around again. "Green light..." it continues singing.

I share a glance with Sang-woo. He looks at me with a troubled gaze. We move forward, but I'm not so eager to be fast this time. I stare at the boy on the ground as his friend approaches him, leaning over his crumpled figure.

"Red light..."

We stop again. I see the friend of the boy trying to say something to him out of ear shot. But that's when he suddenly staggers back from the boy on the ground, his body going completely rigid. Spinning on the heel of his foot, he bolts straight back towards us, away from his friend and away from the robot at the other end of this place, terror written all over his face.

Then there's another bang and I watch as a hole is punctured through his chest.

Blood spurts out onto a woman in front of him, and he crumbles to the floor.

What... the... fuck?

Then it all happens at once.

Screaming fills the arena. Women, men, everybody and everything falls into chaos. Almost everyone runs back to the doors we came from, banging their fists against them, desperate to escape. I'm frozen with fear, feet glued to the ground as loud bangs, which I now realise are gunshots, begin going off. People begin collapsing around me, blood and brain matter flying everywhere. Warm, wet liquid hits my face, drizzling down over my cheeks.

I can feel my body begin to tremble. "Don't move," someone says. It's Sang-woo's voice and I realise he's still beside me. There's a tremor in his voice. "Just don't, (y/n). Not a muscle."

Tears well but I listen to his instructions. The gunshots don't stop. Not for a good five minutes. After the final gunshot, the voice over the speaker talks again.

"Let me repeat. You can move forward while the tagger shouts, "Green light, red light". If your movement is detected afterward, you will be eliminated."

The horror sinks in all at once.

Eliminated means killed.

"Green light..."

My legs feel heavy. I can't get myself to move, shock rendering my muscles useless. But fingers wrap around my wrist. Someone tugs me forward. "You need to keep moving, (y/n)," Sang-woo says.

"T-They're dead," I whisper, stumbling along as he pulls me forward.

"Yes and you will be too if you don't pull yourself together," he snaps.

"Red light."

He's still holding my wrist as we freeze still, staring dead ahead, not daring to move even our eyes.

Two gunshots sound. Two bodies fall to the floor.

I notice Gi-hun laying on the floor next to us, a dead man on top of him. He trembles, absolutely terrified. Sang-woo talks to Gi-hun without moving his head, saying he needs to get up, that he'll die if he stays on the floor.
