Description
Thom and Jonny are growing distant until something brings them back together.
—————
November first, 1985
It was a cold day, turned into an even colder night. Jonny and Thom were walking back to their dorms. The rest of the band had stayed at Phils place for the night. They had just finished up a 3 hour band rehearsal. A rehearsal filled with laughing about the big party that's happening at their preppy school as they speak. A rehearsal filled with Thom being quieter than usual. He had just went through a breakup a few days before. The band had been trying to cheer him up lately, but not too much. They felt guilty for it, but they started to realize that songwriting came much easier when there was a depressing haze hanging over everyone's head. Sure it was just a high school breakup, but everyone knew it was more than that to Thom. He had really liked her. He wrote songs about her and talked about her every second of everyday. Maybe one day he will look back on the breakup and laugh about how stupid high schoolers are, but it's hard for him to laugh right now, especially after he had found her in bed with another boy.

It was also a rehearsal filled with teasing the youngest member, Colins baby brother, Jonny. Everyone in the band loved Jonny. It wasn't even a question when Colin showed the rest of the band his little brothers guitar skills. He was in the band in an instant. It's like Jonny knew and could do anything. He was like a child prodigy or something. Thom would say he's a genius. He instantly took Jonny under his wings at Abingdon. They became best friends. Jonny never opened up to anyone. His hair always covered his eyes and his hands always stayed clamped together at his face to cover his mouth. He never talked, in fear of his lisp getting in the way. Jonny didn't even open up to Thom much. He would follow Thom around and laugh at his jokes. He would help Thom write songs when no one else could understand what Thom was going for. He did all of this while staying silent and hidden. Jonny was so lonely his whole life, and maybe he liked it that way, but he couldn't help but think about how nice it would be to have someone to listen to sometimes. Colin and Thom had introduced Jonny to Andy, Thoms little brother. Jonny liked Andy. Andy was an amazing musician and a good person, but Andy didn't talk much either. Jonny and Andy just never clicked. They would play music on the side sometimes, and they had even had a band together, but when that band split up, Thom had to hurry and snatch Jonny and his guitar up before anyone else could. And he did, successfully. Until About a month ago, when Jonny met a girl named Mary. She had a soft voice and she liked quiet guys. It was perfect, because Jonny was quiet and he liked girls with soft voices.

They hit off immediately. She went to a different school. Abbingdon was an all boys school. It was right down the street from an all girls school. This called for a lot of sneaking into dorms and crazy parties. She would speak up for Jonny when he didn't wanna talk, she would go to parties and invite Jonny. He obviously never went, he was the farthest thing from a party person, but he liked that she was wild and a risk taker. All of this stuff made sense to everyone. They were the perfect couple. Everyone swooned over Jonny and Mary, except for Thom.

Thom hated Mary, which he felt awful for. She never did anything to him. In fact, she was amazing to him. She was just like an angel. She would smile at him everytime she saw him and she would compliment his musical skills all the time. She did that with everyone. What's not to love about her. Thom didn't know, all he knew was that she took his best friend from him, and that was enough to make him despise her. He had so much stuff to talk to Jonny about. He only wanted to talk to Jonny, because Jonny would listen. He wouldn't try and give Thom advice or an answer on what to do, even if Thom was being a complete ass. He would just clasp his hands in front of his face and listen. He would nod his head along, even if he didn't agree. If he knew Thom was hurting, he would listen. No matter what. Thom didn't see what was so special about mary, other than her angelic looks and her amazing personality. But Thom had some of her best personality traits too. He would speak up for Jonny and he would take risks and go to parties. But he's not Mary. No one is like mary.

Thom sat in misery the whole band rehearsal. He would cringe anytime the band would tease Jonny about Mary. Mary this, Mary that. Thom just sat in the corner, plucking at his guitar. Thinking of cliche lyrics and jotting them down on a notepad.

"You're just like an angel, your skin makes me cry"

He stared at that lyric for a while. Mary's skin was perfect. It was smooth and tan. Thom doesn't know where she could've found bloody sunlight in this damned country.

"Hello, earth to Thom"

Thom quickly looked up, startled. Ed was staring at Thom with a slightly worried expression.
"You okay mate?" He asked. Thom just looked back down and responded with a quiet "I'm fine."
"It's getting late and me and Colin have had a few drinks. I think we're gonna crash here with Phil. Are you okay with walking Jonny to his dorm?" Ed asked, patiently. Colin always made someone walk Jonny to his room. Mary would sometimes show up at phils place a few minutes before rehearsal would end and she would nod her head along to the beat as they played. She was so Angelic but she wasn't here tonight.
"Why isn't Mary taking him?" He asked. Jonny sat in the other corner of the small room. They would always talk about Jonny like he wasn't there. Jonny could never tell if he was grateful for that or if he was slightly embarrassed.
"I don't know." He turned to Jonny. "Jonny where's Mary?" Ed asked. Jonny clasped his hands in front of his mouth so nobody could watch his mouth move while he talked. He was embarrassed of his teeth. He avoided the letter S at all costs.
"She's at the party" he replied. Everyone knew which party he was talking about. They were probably the only people that weren't at the party. Thom sighed. He was embarrassed to be around Jonny right now. He knew Jonny would rather be around Mary.

"I can walk myself you know? I don't want to be a bother." Jonny said, embarrassed that Thom would have to go out of his way to take Jonny home. Thom looked up, kind of suprised, because he couldn't believe that jonny thought he was the one being a bother.

"No, no I'll take you Jonny. I've got to get back to my room anyways" he said, standing up and putting his coat on. It was a long, navy blue coat. It was almost identical to Jonnys long, dark green coat. They both grabbed their guitars and headed out the door. That's how they got here, at 11:30 pm, November first, 1985, walking back to their dorms on this freezing night.

As they stepped into the hallway, everything instantly became quiet, except for the muffled laughter heard behind Phil's door and the buzzing of the ac. Thom stretched his arms up and let out a yawn. He started towards the exit of the building. Jonny followed behind him. Thom pushed on the giant door, a blast of cold air hitting him and Jonny in the face. They both crossed their arms over their chest, their guitars in cases on their backs. They started to slowly make their way down the sidewalk. Jonny looked over at Thom. Thom was looking straight forward. His expression wouldn't be readable to the average person, but Jonny could read it. Jonny knew that Thom was about to say or do something wild and spontaneous. He had an idea on the tip of his tongue and he's trying to hold it back, for whatever reason. Finally he opened his mouth and Jonny prepares himself for Thoms words. Fog leaves Thoms mouth as he speaks. This prompts Jonny to look in front of him and let out a breath. He likes when the air does that.

"We should go to that party" Thom says.
