Why Can't Quirks Just Work?

"Thanks Kiri," I say, accepting his hand to pull me back on my feet." He smiles, pointed teeth flashing. "No problem 'Reta. I'm glad you're feeling better now," he answers.

I brush the dust from my hero boots, turning back to Bakugou. "Already, I'm ready if you are."

We'd been doing rotations in pairs of two's for a couple hours now- at least I thought that was how much time had passed. I wasn't great at telling time, and the only clock in the gym was high on the wall opposite us. Currently both Kiri and Bakugou were going against me, while I attempted to see how much shadow I could use in daylight against Bakugou. It was difficult, but if I managed to block out most of his vision, it was easier to focus on Kirishima with my other weapon-quirk. It made me focus on both quirks and once.

Maybe 15 minutes ago I'd overexerted myself to the point I passed out for a few seconds. The strain of light combined with basically draining my body of iron had caused the faint spell. According to Bakugou, Kiri had gone back to the dorms to get some stuff for the whole iron-deficiency thing and he had dragged me into some shade.

I was grateful the two cared to pay enough attention to my quirk rants that they knew what to do. I knew how to help them both if they overused their quirks too, but it would take some high-level shit for that to happen.

Anyway, Bakugou waves me off. "Nah, I'm pretty tired. I think I'll head back to the dorms after I change." I nod. "Alright, don't forget to drink some water." He sends me a grin, even if it's full of arrogance. "Yea, yea. I will, forgery." I huff a laugh at the new nickname before turning with a slight wave to them as they head for the locker rooms.

I head from the large open space for sparring and partner training and other stuff to the area with all the school's workout equipment. I go through my usual routine for awhile until I hear the gym doors open.

Stopping my flips around the chin-up bar, I hang loosely for a second before dropping to the ground. I flip my hair dramatically out of my face (I was a little bored, I'll be honest- I forgot my phone and earbuds).

Glancing towards the door as I stand and head for the bench press, I notice some people from Class 1-B have arrived. I don't really talk to anyone from that class except for Tetsutetsu, but only because of Kiri being like a brother to him. I don't recognize the two. One has long hair that kinda looks like tentacles while the other looked like a normal person (Author here- I don't know any class 1-b students other than Monoma and Tetsutetsu so please just go with it).

I wonder if other people are going to join them or if it's just the two, I ponder as I adjust my postion on the bench press. I don't know who last used it, but I'm too lazy to change the weights so I'll just see if I can bench what's there. I start, realizing it's a bit heavier than what I usually use, but not terrible.

The pair of 1-B students start, with the tentacle-hair one using their hair/tentacles to defend against attacks from the now glowing other.

I get distracted by a bright glare from the second person and drop one hand from the weight to rub my blinded eyes.

I hear a "Woah!" and barely glanced up in time to see the weight drop towards me from unbalance. A pink ting surrounds it as I turn to Uraraka, who's holding it in the air. I grab both ends of it, allowing her to release her quirk.

"Are you alright Taoreta-kun?" Iida asks, doing his hand-wave thing. I nod, setting the weight back on its handle.

"Thanks for the assist, Uraraka," I mention, standing from my spot. She smiles, almost as blinding as the one person's quirk. "Oh I'm just glad you're okay. Besides, good practice for helping friends right?" I send her a small grin in return.

I wish them luck on their training and decide to just take a shower in the locker rooms since I feel kinda gross.

====================================

I walk through the dorm house door, still toweling my hair dry. Shoji greets me with a friendly wave before continuing his conversation with Tokoyami. I pause at the door to the storage/laundry room to throw my towel into a hamper. I head back into the common room, sitting down on a couch and pulling out my phone. I scroll through Twitter for a few minutes until I feel someone tap on my shoulder. I glance up to find Midoriya and Todoroki standing there. "Oh hey guys. What's up?" I ask, fixing my posture slightly.

"We're going shopping with Akuma, would you like to come?" Midoryia asks. I give them a grin. "Sure, I'll come. Give me a minute to clean up a bit and I'll meet you outside."
