Chapter 21 - Base

2015 -

I had moved back to New York and into the new Avengers tower to help the team take down the secret Hydra bases to find Loki's missing scepter. It's been extremely hard knowing that Bucky was out there alone...he is supposed to be with me. But I had to work.

Since I moved out of Washington, I made sure to get weekly texts to have Updates on Peggy. I also make sure to call her.

I was riding my motorcycle through the snowy forest, throwing my shield at the soldiers as I ride past Nat and Clint. We were taking down yet another base, hoping this was the last.

"Shit!" Tony suddenly yells.

"Language!" I say immediately and instantly regretting it. "Jarvis, what's the view from upstairs?"

"The central building is protected by some kind of energy shield. Strucker's technology is well beyond any other Hydra base we've taken."

"Loki's scepter must be here. Strucker couldn't mount this defense without it. At long last." Thor sighs.

"At long last is lasting a little long, boys." Natasha says, I ride past her and hurl my shield again.

"Yeah. I think we lost the element of surprise."

"Wait a second. No one else is going to deal with the fact that Cap just said language?" Tony asks.

"I know." I sigh. I sit up as I approach a group of soldiers, flipping off my bike and letting go. It flies into the soldiers and into a tank. "It just slipped out." I shake my head, running through the forest and taking out soldiers as I go. I stop running through the forest as I feel something. I turn just as someone speeds past me, making me flip. "We have an enhanced in the field."

"Clint's hit!" Natasha suddenly says.

I run through the forest, hurling my shield as I look up at the castle. "Stark, we really need to get inside."

"I'm closing in." After a few minutes there's a small explosion. "Drawbridge is down, people."

Thor lands down beside me. "The enhanced?"

"He's a blur. All the new player's we've faced, I've never seen this. In fact, I still haven't." I nod.

"Clint's hit pretty bad, guys. We're gonna need evac."

"I can get Barton to the jet. The sooner we're gone the better. You and Stark secure the scepter." Thor says to me.

"Copy that."

Thor look ahead at the approaching soldiers lining up in front of their tank. "It looks like they're lining up."

"Well, they're excited." I hold my shield up and Thor hits it with his hammer, knocking all the soldiers down.

"Find the scepter." He flies off.

"And for gosh sake, watch your language!"

"That's not going away anytime soon." I sigh.

I make my way to the castle as Natasha focuses on getting the soldiers in custody. "We're locked down out here."

"Then get to Banner, time for a lullaby." I respond. I step into the castle and run down a long hall at a soldier, tackling him into a door to see Strucker. "Baron Strucker. Hydra's number one thug."

"Technically, I'm a thug for Shield." He smiles.

"Well then technically you're unemployed. Where's Loki's scepter?"

"Don't worry, I know when I'm beat. You'll mention how I cooperated, I hope." He nods.

"I'll put it right under illegal human experimentation. How many are there?" Suddenly a woman uses her powers to knock me down. I quickly get up as she hurries off. "We have a second enhanced. Female. Do not engage."

"You'll have to be faster than-" I quickly knock him out with my shield and roll my eyes.

"Guys, I got Strucker."

"Yeah, I got... something bigger." Tony responds.

"Stark, let's get Barton back to the tower." I grab strucker.

We all meet up at the Jet, Bruce was sitting on the floor while I stood beside Thor. "Thor, report on the Hulk?" Natasha asks.

"The gates of Hel are filled with the screams of his victims." Natasha glares at Thor and Bruce groans in despair. "Uh, but, not the screams of the dead, of course. No no, uh...wounded screams, mainly whimpering, a great deal of complaining and tales of sprained deltoids and, and uh... and gout."

"Good one." I roll my eyes.

"Hey Banner, Dr. Cho's on her way in from Seoul, is it okay if she sets up in your lab?" Tony asks.

"Uh, yeah, she knows her way around."

Tony walks over to us as we look at the scepter. "It feels good, yeah? I mean, you've been after this thing since Shield collapsed. Not that I haven't enjoyed our little raiding parties, but..."

"No, but this... this brings it to a close." Thor smiles.

"As soon as we find out what else this has been used for. I don't just mean weapons. Since when is Strucker capable of human enhancement?" I ask.

"Banner and I'll give it the once before it goes back to Asgard. Is that cool with you? I mean, just a few days until the farewell party. You're staying right?"

"Yes, yes, of course. A victory should be honored with revels." Thor says loudly.

"Yeah. Who doesn't love revels. Captain?"

"Hopefully this puts an end to the Chitauri and Hydra, so. Yes, revels." I sigh.

Once we get back home, Doctor Cho rushes Clint to the lab, leaving Tony and I alone to gather our things. He looks at me as if he wanted to say something but stops when Maria walks over. "Lab's all set up, boss."

"Uh, actually, she's the boss. I just pay for everything, and design everything and make everyone look cooler." Tony points at me.

I smile at him and walk down the hall with her. "What's the word on Strucker?"

"NATO's got him."

"The two enhanced?" I glance over at her as she hands me a tablet which videos of the two.

"Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. Twins. Orphaned at ten when a shell collapsed their apartment building. Sokovia's had a rough history. It's nowhere special but it's on the way to everywhere special."

"Their abilities?" I ask.

"He's got increased metabolism and improved thermal homeostasis. Her thing is neural electric interfacing, telekinesis, mental manipulation." I look at her funny, and she rephrases the statement. "He's fast and she's weird."

"Well, they're going to show up again." I nod.

"Agreed. File says they volunteered for Strucker's experiments. It's nuts."

I chuckle and step into the elevator. "Right. What kind of monster would let a German scientist experiment on them to protect their country?"

"We're not at war, Captain."

"They are." I nod, closing the elevator and going to my room.

I put my things down and take a long shower, laying back on my bed and staring at a photo of Bucky and I.

I felt empty.
