"Are you sure you wanna sign up for that?"
Deena looks at her best friends who were in front of her, Kate leaning against a tree, Simon picking at the sticks, leaves and rocks in the grass. She simply nods. "Why? Do you think it's a bad idea?"
"No, that's not what I meant," Kate sighs, "I think it's a great idea. I just don't want you to sign up for it, really start to like it just to quit. You know what happened with lacrosse."
"That was because my mental health was declining. Are you saying I have commitment issues, Kate Schmidt?" she finishes her sentence in a more sarcastic tone, showing Kate she was joking.
"I wasn't saying that, but you do."
Deena dramatically gasps as a joke, Kate rolling her eyes to show her how she felt about that. "Anyway, if you really like band, then go for it. I think you'd be a great drum player- holy shit, Deena, we'd be doing band and cheer together! Sign up for it!"
She grins, leaning against the same tree as Kate, both of them watching Simon swing back and forth on the tree branch, just for it to break. He falls, laughs emerging from the others mouths.
He pretends to feel hurt, immediately making them feel bad for laughing. He gets up, shoving the middle finger in their faces, making Deena groan.
"So, how excited are you to see the lovely Samantha Fraser again after a long summer break?" Kate teases. Blushing, Deena covers her face with her hands in hopes to hide her blush, but she fails horribly, not because of her hand placement, but because Kate and Simon knew her too well.
"I should've never told you two about that."
"Excuse me?" Kate grunts, "you didn't tell us anything. We figured it out ourselves, you just confirmed it. Trust me, we knew."
"You should have told us," Simon joins in, "even though we knew, we could have known sooner. Gave you some tips, maybe you two would be eating each others faces with your aggressive kissing right now."
"She's not a bad kisser," Kate huffs, moving her shoe around the mud. "Kind of offensive for you to say when you know we use to practice kissing under those bleachers all the time."
"I was saying, Sam's the bad kisser."
"How would you know?" Deena scoffs, arms crossed as if he had just said the most offensive thing to her.
"Have you never seen her kissing people? I mean, maybe the way she kisses is different in your little daydreams about her, Deena. Sorry about that."
"Shut up!" she groans, Simon laughing as he twirls with the curls in his blonde hair. "How would you know anyway? You got a thing for my crush, Kalivoda? Why would you be watching her kissing other people if you didn't like her, hmm?"
"I have a crush on a man, Deena."
She stands with a blank expression on her face, trying to speak but instead only sharing hand expressions. "I know that, I was joking."
"I know that."
"How does she kiss you in your daydreams?" Kate bluntly asks in the most expressionless tone, leaving Deena unsure of the tone behind her message.
"You know what, I'm not even gonna answer that. But, yeah. I guess I am excited to, talk to her."
"Excited to share a few glances at her and then crush on her the rest of the school year without even getting anywhere near relationship close with her?"
She looks at Kate, her mouth agape, not even knowing how to respond to that. She was shocked, but Kate wasn't exactly wrong. That was how it had been like the other years at Shadyside High School, but this time, Deena wanted to try, even if it resulted in her heart getting broken, because hey, it was a worth a try, Sam is a nice girl.
