"Are you alright?"
Sam's fists clench as she turns around, meeting Deena's glance. Though Simon and Kate were there too, it was Deena she was focused on.
"Yeah, I am. The car is just fucking, broke down, or something, I don't know."
"You need help moving it? Or fixing, it. Um, sorry, I don't know if you remember me. Deena-"
"Yeah, I know, I know who you are."
She slightly smiles, and even though she would look back on it later and hate herself for smiling at Sam Fraser remembering who she is, she was happy.
"So.. do you need help?" Kate barges in the conversation, a grin on her face.
Groaning and then sighing, she finally unclenches her fists, the marks of her fingernails dug into the palm of her hand. "Yeah, yeah. That'd be great."
"I've never really been into cars. I mean, who the fuck is?" Deena mumbles, patting the back of the car, "I don't know what's wrong with it."
"Simon," Kate speaks, "you're a guy. Go fix it."
Simon can't help but chuckle as he opens the door, looking at the gas tank. "You under a lot of stress or something, Fraser?"
"What?"
"You have no gas. The car itself is fine."
Her hand meets her forehead, letting out a big sigh, partially of relief, and partially of how dumb she felt for not checking that first. "Yeah, I guess I am. The- the stress part. I have uh, gas, in my garage."
"Alright," he responds, leaning on the car, "Kate! You wanna go get it with me?"
He winks at her so she would catch on, and she happily nods. Deena sighs, leaning against the car, standing un silence with Sam beside her. As if it wasn't awkward enough, the sound of Sam's parents arguing in the house behind made it even more awkward, something neither thought was possible.
Though she would have preferred Deena say something first, she would have felt like shit and most likely would stay up for hours thinking about what she could have said if she didn't do this.
"Thanks for driving me to school that day."
"Yeah! No problem at all. Least I could do for a helpless blonde cheerleader walking in the rain."
She laughs, expecting one from Sam also, but nothing follows except arguing from before continuing on. "Are you making fun of me?"
Her awkward smile quickly changes to a concerned expression. "No. I mean, I was, but only in a joking way! I didn't mean to offend yo-"
She smiles, uncontrollable laughter following after, and Deena only lets out a sigh of relief. "I'm just fucking with you! Shit, the look on your face."
She joins the other girl in laughing, Sam nudging her ever so softly on the arm. "You're a good person, you know? Thanks for everything. The car, the party and whatnot. Why you do so much for a stranger, I don't know, but I appreciate it more than you think."
Though she thought to herself, that Sam wasn't a stranger, she never actually said it out loud. As Simon and Kate walked back, each with gas in their hands, they place both down by the car pump.
"One of these was low, so we brought two. Could pay and get you another one if you need it, that alright?"
"Yeah, no, it'll be fine. Thank you."
Kate sighs and leans up against the car, standing beside Deena. Simon fills the car with the gas, and Sam anxiously shakes her leg on the road.
"Car's all good," the blonde boy smiles, walking around and patting the trunk of the car. "You have a good night."
