It was an unusually warm day in late April of 2015 when Jenn Colella's iPhone began to vibrate on the picnic blanket that sat on the grass in Central Park. Siobhan, who had been soaking up the sun on the light blue blanket, lifted her sunglasses off of her eyes and hit the talk button.
"Jenn Colella's phone, Siobhan speaking" the midwife answered formally, years of practice under her belt.
"Hey Siobhan, it's Idina" the female voice on the other end of the line told her. Siobhan smiled. She would have recognized that voice even without the formal introduction.
"Hey Idina, long time no see. How's Broadway-less life been treating you?" Siobhan asked with a laugh, lying back on the blanket. Idina giggled.
"Pretty good. I've been super busy with rehearsing for the tour though that I haven't really had much time to think about it" she told her.
"Oh yeah, Jenn was talking about that. She got tickets for your show in New York for us. I feel like I should warn you that she plans on being your biggest fan there...I'm not really sure what that means, but it doesn't sound good" Siobhan said with a laugh, making both of the women laugh harder.
"Speaking of your girlfriend...is she around?" Idina asked once she got herself under control.
"No, she just left to go to the bathroom. But we're in Central Park, so it could be a while. Why, what's up?" the midwife asked, sitting up again.
"Would you mind if I stole her this Saturday evening for a few hours?" Idina asked, attempting to keep her voice from sounding too serious, but failing miserably.
"I don't mind, but I'll have to ask her. Can she call you back in a few minutes?" Siobhan asked, confused at the singer's tone of voice.
"Yeah, that's no problem. Well, enjoy the sunshine Siobhan. I'll talk to you later" Idina told her, smiling despite herself.
"Bye Idina" Siobhan said with a smile.
"Bye Siobhan" the aforementioned woman told her, hanging up the phone.
Siobhan put the phone down next to her and attempted to relax in the early afternoon sunshine. But try as she might, she couldn't stop thinking about Idina's call. Sure, they had joked around, but there was an underlying tone in the supernova's voice that just didn't sit right with her. Siobhan and Idina were by no means best friends, but she was one of Jenn's, and that meant that it was Siobhan's job to care about her too. And it wasn't like Idina wasn't a good person; she was one of the nicest that she had ever met, and she didn't like that Idina was hurting. In fact, the midwife was so preoccupied with thinking about Idina that she didn't hear her girlfriend sneaking up behind her until Jenn sat down on the blanket next to her.
"Hello gorgeous. Miss me?" the blonde woman asked, leaning over top of the brunette and kiss her gently on the lips. Siobhan smiled but didn't say anything, still thinking about Idina. Jenn frowned when she didn't get a response. "What's wrong darling? When I left you didn't have a care in the world and now it looks like you have the weight of the world on shoulders" the older woman asked. Siobhan finally snapped out of her trance and took off her sunglasses so she could look her girlfriend in the eyes.
"Idina called while you were gone" the dark haired woman told her. Jenn felt her stomach drop. Was something wrong with Idina?
"Really? What did she want? Is she okay?" she asked. Siobhan nodded hesitantly.
"Yeah, I think she's fine. She wanted to know if she could steal you away for a few hours on Saturday evening. I told her that you'd call her back in a few minutes" she explained. Jenn raised an eyebrow.
"Okay...I'm not seeing the problem here" she said carefully, not connecting the dots. Siobhan sighed, shaking her head.
"I...maybe there isn't a problem. I'm not sure. But she sounded like she was trying too hard to sound happy" the younger girl told her. Jenn frowned, raising an eyebrow.
"Huh. Okay, well I'll give her a call right now. You don't mind if I go out with her, do you?" the blonde asked. Siobhan shook her head.
"Not at all. But, aren't you supposed to be going out with James that night?" she asked. Jenn slapped a hand to her forehead.
"Shit. Well maybe I'll see if he can join me and Dee" the blonde said, unlocking her iPhone and dialing Idina's number. The brunette picked up on the third ring.
"Hello?" Idina asked, having not checked her caller I.D.
"Hey Dee, it's Jenn! I heard from a little birdy that you were looking for me?" the blonde asked. Idina smiled at hearing her friend's voice.
"Yeah, I was wondering if you could join me for dinner this Saturday evening?" Idina asked, an anxious undertone to her voice that didn't go unnoticed by Jenn.
"I'd love to Dee, but James and I kind of already had plans...would you mind if he joined us?" the blonde woman asked. Idina frowned on the other end of the line.
"I was actually hoping that it could just be the two of us...you know, a girls night out and all that" the brunette told her. After Jenn didn't say anything, she continued. "But don't cancel your plans on my account. We can do dinner a different time" Idina said quickly.
"No, don't be silly! I can hang out with James anytime; you, on the other hand, are about to leave on a world tour in a month. I'll reschedule with James. He'll understand" Jenn reassured her. Idina paused for a moment, and then smiled.
"Well if you're sure" she said, hoping that the blonde was sure.
"I am Dee. It's been far too long since I got a magical Idina Menzel hug anyways" Jenn said with a smile, causing Idina to giggle. Jenn smiled even bigger when she heard the familiar laugh.
"Okay, well in that case how does 7:30 at Talia's on Amsterdam sound? My treat" Idina asked once she got herself under control.
"Well I'm certainly not one to refuse food; especially free food. I'll be there" Jenn told her. Idina grinned.
"Then I guess I will see you soon" she said.
"I guess you will. Talk to you soon babe" Jenn told her, smiling.
"Bye Jenn" she said, hanging up the phone. Jenn set the phone down on the blanket next to her, lying back next to her girlfriend.
"Well?" Siobhan asked, rolling over to face the blonde.
"Dinner at 7:30 at a place called Talia's on the Upper West Side" Jenn said with a smile. The brunette rolled her eyes.
"No, I meant did she sound like something was wrong?" she asked. Jenn nodded slowly.
"Yeah, she did sound a bit odd. But don't worry; Detective Colella is on the case" the blonde said with a laugh, making Siobhan laugh too.
"Detective Colella? Really?" she giggled. Jenn laughed, rolling on top of her girlfriend.
"Well why not? I'm great at uncovering the truth...and other things" the blonde said, keeping her voice low as her hand slowly crept underneath the younger woman's shirt. The brunette laughed.
"Race you home then...Detective" Siobhan said with a seductive wink, rolling her girlfriend off of her, getting up off the blanket and running towards the street. Jenn laughed wildly, picking up the blanket and running after her girlfriend.
