BLAZER BY CLAIRO
time spent alone with timothée was rare these days.
it was too often that he had work to do, and that you had to stay at home with cole.
so sitting with him there in the square, sketching his stretched out body, felt extra nice. it reminded you of how much you used to hang out when you were younger. although, it was usually with jo and meg as well.
you looked down at him, at the way he was laying there, looking right up at you with a small smile.
"what are you doing?"
"looking at you."
you held your gaze, trying hard to ignore the pretty colour of his eyes, and how cute his smile was.
"i mean, what do you intend to do?"
timothée paused.
"you mean in life?"
his smile faltered, and dropped, at the serious tone the conversation had taken.
"well, i've been doing some more writing, and-"
"that's a waste of time."
you didn't hesitate as you interrupted him, not bothering if it offended him, looking down at the drawing in your lap.
"then what would you have me do?"
timothée looked as if he were enjoying testing your patience. he already knew what your answer was, you had told him what you thought of his writing enough times.
he leant back so that he was almost lying down, admiring how you managed to keep your poise.
you were silent for a while.
"you're good at acting. and I see how happy you are when you're on stage. i think you could really make something of yourself doing that."
"ah, you're not playing fair."
timothée sighed, getting up from his spot by you. he was annoyed, he really was, but he also knew he could never stay mad at you for too long.
you stood, watching timothée as he faced away from you, his hand in his hair.
"here."
he turned, and you handed him the pad you had been leaning on, along with a few of your other sketches.
"it's very good."
he brought the picture closer to his face, examining the pencil marks. he slipped another drawing out from behind the pad, and smiled. he hadn't seen this one before.
"when did you draw this one?" he asked, looking up and catching your gaze.
you looked down.
"it was that day at the beach. the same day i met cole."
for some reason, it felt wrong talking about your fiancé with timothée.
"oh. that's right. what's he doing?"
"he's in london. on business." you looked down at your drawings, adding a few unnecessary lines just to avoid looking at timothée.
timothée looked up at the sky, wandering a little further away from you. he knew he probably shouldn't say what he was thinking in that moment, but he couldn't help himself.
"don't marry him."
he kept his eyes on the clouds scuttling across the sky, but he could feel your wide eyes on the side of his face.
"why?"
finally he brought his eyes to yours, and as he did, you felt your gut twist. he wandered nearer, stopping a few feet away from you.
"you know why."
his voice was quiet, calculated and careful, and he studied your reaction with great interest.
"no, no, no. timothée. no."
timothée watched the tears fill up your eyes, and immediately felt bad. he hated that something he said had made you cry. he extended his hand to touch your face, but you shook your head and took a few uncertain steps back. when he looked at you like that, you could only think of your sister. did he used to look at jo like that?
"you're being mean. stop it, stop being mean."
a look of confusion flashed across timothée's face. sure, he hadn't thought through what he had said, but surely he wasn't being mean, right?
"what? how am i being mean?"
"i have been second to jo my whole life in everything." you hated how the tears dropped down your face, and how your voice wavered and cracked, but you kept going. you had been feeling this your whole life, and it felt good to finally say something about it. "and i will not be the person you settle for just because you cannot have her. no. i won't do it."
you busied yourself with packing away your art supplies, avoiding looking at him as you hastily shoved everything into your bag. when everything was put away, you looked up at timothée. he seemed calm, the swirling in his dark eyes at peace.
"not when i have spent my entire life loving you."
timothée watched you go. he wanted to say something to stop you, to make you stay, but he didn't know what to say.
he never knew what to say to you.
