"But on a Wednesday in a cafe, I watched it begin again"
Unknown Caller
The words have haunted you for the past 7 years. You clicked the ignore button before shoving the phone in your pocket. You had enough to worry about and you didn't need anymore on your plate, even if it was just a telemarketer.
Everything was putting you on your toes as the days approached, all counting down to that dreaded one. The day you had to go to England to testify at Devin's parole hearing. It was only a week away and that little voice inside your head was nagging at you to tell someone. You knew it was right, but you couldn't bear having everyone treat you like you were a fragile piece of glass again.
A knock at the window pulled you back to reality. You hit the unlock button as you saw Bella point down to the door handles. "How was school?" You asked your kids as they climbed into the car. A small groan came from your eldest as a few giggles were exchanged by the twins.
"Just great" your daughter mumbled as she buckled her seatbelt and put her backpack on her lap.
"WE GOT OUR FIFTH-GRADE BUDDIES"
Ah. The one place of solitude Bella had from the twins was disturbed. Bella loved her siblings but they got to be too much sometimes. The twins were in first grade, the highest you would let them go, and were supposed to have a different buddy than Bella. You knew how much your daughter craved peace and solitude from her siblings, that's why you advocated for her to be paired with a different first grader.
You gave your daughter a small knowing smile, mouthing that you two could talk later, before turning back to the twins. "Really? Who did you get?" You asked, turning on your motherly tone as you turned the key in the ignition.
"I got Bella" Amara practically sang out her response with how giddy she was to spend more time with her older sister. "And I got Bella's boyfriend" Ezra finished his sister's phrase with an overemphasis on the word boyfriend. The twins acted like Bella didn't tell you anything, but it wasn't the first time you heard about her boyfriend.
"Those are some great buddies" You smiled at the twins in the rearview mirror, "Do you guys want to know some really good news?" The twins nodded eagerly, they still had no idea that Spencer was home. "Daddy's home for the week and we're going to spend the whole weekend together."
You smiled at the excited squeals that came from the backseat, the sound almost distracting you from the vibration that came from your pocket. You pulled out your phone to make sure that nothing new happened regarding Spencer. The notification clouded your mind, blocking out all of the noise.
New Voicemail
You clicked on the notification as you skimmed over the transcript.
'Hey Y/N, Devin said that this was your new number. It was a bitch trying to find you, but I'm staying outside DC for a few days and I wanted to catch up. Reminisce about the old days, call me back. Love you so much, Esme'
