It was a cloudy day in spring when it happened. Pink petals from cherry blossom trees flowed in the wind.
She clenched the piece of paper, her diploma, tightly with her right hand and pressed it against her chest. She felt nervous and yet, she knew she had to do it. She contemplated about it a lot the past few weeks. She spent sleepless nights just thinking about it.
‘Finally, this is the day,’ she thought. ‘I have to do it or I will end up regretting it.’
She gathered up her courage and approached him. She had to look up though for he was taller than her by a lot. His stern gaze almost made her giggle. He was always frowning but she managed to fall in love with him anyway.
“Ushiwaka-chan,” she called and smiled. ‘I’ve come to say goodbye,’ she added sadly in her thoughts. She took a deep breath and looked him in the eye. “I have something to say to you.”
He raised an eyebrow at her. “What is it?” he asked.
“I-,” she hesitated. “I like you, Ushijima Wakatoshi.”
His breathing hitched for a second but he quickly regained his composure. ‘What does she mean?’ he thought, being very confused.
“I’ve liked you for a long time. Even though you’re blunt and may come across as rude, you are gentle and kind when known very well,” she said and smiled. “I’m happy to have seen that side of you. I’m sure that a whole lot more of people would come to misunderstand you as time passes, but I’m sure that some of them would come to know you like I do. Ushijima, you don’t have to answer my confession. I only wanted you to know since we are not going to see each other again. Goodbye…”
