Regulus was running, running, running. Pettigrew was a Deatheater, he had seen it, seen it in his rat brain. He was also a Marauder. A stupid, fucking, obnoxious, trusted Marauder, a fact that Riddle was almost certainly going to use against the Order. He needed to tell Sirius, and James, and Lily, and Remus, and Mary, and Dumbledore, and probably Mad-Eye as well. Fuck. He crumpled the two-year old letter in his pocket, squeezing it hard in hopes of getting some of his frustration of:
Dear Mr (lord) Black,
I hope you will consider what we discussed, if you do you will only have to send an owl.
Warmest regards,
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian DumbledoreA crack of apparition sounded near Regulus, but he did not flinch as an old man with a ever-growing length of silver beard appeared in front of him. He inclined and smiled, gentil as always, "My Lord Black, a pleasure as always."
Regulus inclined his head back with a sour smile, "My Lord Dumbledore, I wish I could say the same but the circumstances under which I asked for your presence are far from a pleasure."
Dumbledore waved an airy hand as if to bat his worries aside and Regulus gritted his teeth. "You needn't call me that, I assure you, and if you wish to cast aside pleasantries I would be very happy to indulge."
Regulus nodded and there was a chilly silence where he refused to grant the old man the same allowances and Dumbledore coughed. He could hardly resined his offer of a less formal title. "Well then, shall we go?"
Regulus stepped along beside him and grasped his arm so he could guide him to the location of the headquarters of The Order of The Phoenix and they disapparated with another loud CRACK!***
Regulus staggered a little when they arrived on the front stoop of the large house and out of the corner of his eye he saw Dumbledore smile. He quickly regained his pose and looked around, "Where is this place?" For a moment, he forgot to speak in the lofty cold manner he had been using with Dumbledore in his ever-present curiosity.
Dumbledore reached forward and knocked on the door, "Somewhere with no ties to the Order.""I'm surprised you got my brother to agree to anything so sensible."
"Believe me, no one was as surprised as I was, My Lord." Dumbledore used the title serenely as ever but there was something a little sharp in his eyes. Regulus didn't notice however.
The subject of Sirius Orion Black had Regulus sweating. He hadn't seen his big brother in two years and he had only pretended to be dead for one. Not to mention all the rest of the gang, which were his friends and who he knew were in the Order. How would they react?
He was about to find out as Dumbledore whispered a password and the door swung open.***
Sirius was huddled with James, Remus, Marlene and Mad-eye around a map discussing possible Death-eater hideouts when the door swung open. In came Dumbledore his beard damp with characteristic English downpour and behind came a stranger clad all in black. Their clothes were seem much more practical than their counterparts wizard clothing. A black Barber (a muggle rain coat) with the hood pulled up, tall black boots and a black woolen jumper. The only item the stranger wore that was not black was the silver and green scarf around his neck, which to Sirius' eyes looked like a snake slowly choking to death.
The 21 year old Sirius Black wrinkled his nose, directing his next words to the Hogwarts Headmaster, "A Slytherin? Do I have to worry that your judgement's gone soft, Professor?""Don't worry, Sirius, I'm determined to prove otherwise." The voice under the hood was disconcerting familiar, so close to his own but.....Sirius shook the thought away quickly, that person, he was gone. Sirius's heart filled with a painful sadness that stubbornly refused to leave him even over a year later. Just as he was about to ask how he knew his name. The stranger dropped his hood to reveal a face Sirius Black had never thought he'd see outside a frame again.
