“Ten.. nine.. eight.. seven.. six.. five.. four.. three.. two.. one!”
Sam finished counting and began to look around for any signs of movement.“Winnie, you're moving!” said Sam angrily, shaking his head in exasperation.
“No, I wasn’t!” whined Winnie. “New rule! There should be a pause for the game!”“Winnie, those aren’t the rules,” said Madi in exhaustion.
“Why do we even bother to play with her,” muttered Kaitlyn scornfully.
“She's six, give her a rest,” insisted Caleb earnestly.* * *
“Those aren’t even the rules,” said Audrix boredly, walking behind from the others with Sam; Sam was guiding his bicycle.
“Yeah, wish she didn’t come out with me to play with you guys,” sighed Sam—he checked his pockets for money, but he saw that he was all out.
“Damn it,” he hissed. “I’m hungry.”Audrix glanced at Sam’s empty pocket and felt a bubble of pity forming in his stomach.
“What did you wanna buy?” asked Audrix, checking his pockets for money, too; he had at least twenty pesos.“You’re serious?” said Sam, looking taken aback.
“Yeah,” said Audrix, grinning.
“I just wanted a popsicle, I guess,” said Sam fervently.Audrix looked at the others, who were sitting on a curb, chatting animatedly. Then, he went to the lady selling popsicles.
“Two lemon popsicles, please,” said Audrix, handing two dollars. The lady gave him the two popsicles and took the money. Audrix mumbled a “thanks” and headed off to Sam, who was now staring at the others for no reason.
“Here,” said Audrix as he finally got back to Sam, handing him the popsicle.
“Thanks for this, Audrix,” said Sam, taking it. He placed the bike down to rest and sat down on the curb opposite the others.
“No problem,” Audrix replied, sitting next to him.
For a few moments, they ate their popsicles silently. When Audrix had finished, he threw his stick in the sewers and stared at the others.
“Audrix, don’t litter!” yelled Madi across them. Audrix disregarded this.“It's getting dark.”
“Yeah.”
There was an awkward pause. Madi approached the two of them.“Hey, Caleb’s heading home,” she said. “We’re going back as well, alright?”
“Okay,” said Audrix and Sam in unison. They grinned at each other.“Alright, g’bye, then!” said Madi, waving her hand and running to her house. Audrix and Sam both stared at her.
“She’s stupid,” said Sam, rolling his eyes and placing his cheek on his palm. Audrix stayed quiet. For no reason, Sam plunged into a rant, including how weird Caleb is and how he dismissed the fact he was racist.
“. . . and I just think he’s funny,” said Sam disgustedly, “funny as in weird.”
“Isn’t he your friend?” said Audrix skeptically.
“Isn’t he yours as well?”
“Touché,” said Audrix, shrugging and avoiding Sam’s eyes. More silence followed. Sam stood up and looked down on Audrix.“Well, I’m heading back home, I guess,” said Sam, stretching.
“‘Night,” said Audrix, standing up as well and waving his hand. As Sam disappeared into the darkness, Audrix stared after him without really meaning to, biting his lip.Would Madi really like him back? He sighed and shook his head. He reminisced the first time he dropped her a hint.

They were walking back home together since their houses were closest to each other.
“So what do you wanna talk about?” asked Madi awkwardly. The out-of-place answer escaped his lips before he could think about it.
“Please don’t friend zone me.”Madi went quiet. Audrix didn’t know whether she heard it or not. Either way he didn’t regret it. They’ve been friends for years now. It was time she knew.
“Well, bye, then, Audrix!” said Madi, waving her hand and running away to her house. Audrix liked it when she did that.
He just wished that she would like him as well.
