The first time Harry saw Louis, they were just passing on the street. Louis smiled at Harry. Neither of them remembered the other five minutes later.

The second time Harry saw Louis, they waited in line next to each other at Starbucks. They didn't recognize each other, but when Harry's drink was done before Louis' even though Louis had ordered first, Louis smiled as he handed Harry his drink. Harry left, and neither remembered the other an hour later.

The third time Harry saw Louis, they were being formally introduced by a mutual friend at a party. Harry thought there was something familiar about Louis' smile, but he couldn't pinpoint it.

Harry used to be sad. He would walk around town at night, dragging his feet on the pavement under the light of the street lamps, just thinking. Thinking that one day he would be gone and his family would be gone and everything would be gone. So what's the point? Thinking like that, Harry knew, was never a good thing, but he couldn't help himself. Whenever he was alone, those thoughts flooded into his mind. So, he embraced them and became an existential mess of a person, the kind that wears old leather boots and scrapes them on the pavement under streetlights, late at night, just thinking.

After their formal introduction, however, Louis didn't leave Harry alone. Louis didn't leave any time for Harry to dwell on existential thoughts. Louis' smile was big and bright and (even though one day he too would be gone) it made Harry forget why he even thought of things like that.

And thus, Harry became the bubbly, live-in-the-moment kind of person that he is today, with the help of Louis and his big, bright smile.
