She was watching.
I could see her.
Just over that small green hill, a figure. A girl, I think. Hard to tell from this far away. But definately there.
My eyes squinted through the sun's rays to try and see who it was, but then they disappeared. Like the wind blew them away as I blinked. Who was that?
"Scar!"
My head whipped round to see my little brother clutching his football under his arm while glaring at me. "You did it again," he grunted, chucking me the ball roughly.
I caught it just as it was going to hit my stomach. "Did what?" I tossed the ball back, pretending to look confused.
Truth was, I was confused. Who was that on the hill?
"Zoned out," he sighed as he caught the ball. "Scar if you don't even wanna play-"
"I'm playing, okay?" I cut him off. Spending some quality time with Will was the least I could do. He needs a break.
"Fine," he mumbled, acting like he was annoyed. But there was a small thankful smile playing on his lips. He chucked back the football which I caught with ease.
Walking up to him, I laughed as I ruffled his brown curly hair that was getting way too long. "C'mon, I'll ask Mom if we can go get ice cream or something. Sound good?" I grinned.
The smile that lit up his face was one that made the sun look ashamed to not be as bright.
Pulling off the sunglasses I was wearing on my head as we walked through the back glass screen door, I caught sight of my mom sitting at the kitchen table reading one of her new fashion magazines that she released.
"Mom?" I called. She looked up at me and smiled with her pearly white straight teeth. Oh what money can do. "Can I take Will out for ice cream?"
She snuck a glance at my little brother and then her blue eyes shifted back to me with a teasing glint. "I'm not sure..." she trailed. "Maybe if Will can pay for it?"
I felt Will stiffen beside me and I laughed. "Mom!" he cried. "You can't do that!"
Will was always one to never have money, due to spending it on video games and new consoles. So anytime someone asks him to pay for something, he can never do it. God help him when he's older and learns that he has to pay for his date.
"Go on," Mom laughed. Before I knew it Will was out the door and in to the front yard.
"Wait up!" I shouted down the hall before giving a quick goodbye to my mother.
I ran out the kitchen and down the hall towards the front door, which was left open due to an over-excited sibling. My running slowed as I saw him staring at something in the sky. "Will?" I called.
No answer.
I stepped out of the house and gently shut the door behind me, never taking my eyes off my little brother. "Will?"
He did nothing, except stare at something in the distance. The blank expression he was wearing did nothing to soothe my nerves and the way he didn't move at all was making it all the worse. "Will, come on. What are you looking at?"
My gaze followed his as the sun's glares protested.
Upon the hill that could be seen from our backyard was a figure, the same one, I think. But that wasn't what made my blood run cold.
They were staring right at us.
I clamped a shaking hand around his arm and tugged. "Come on, let's go." My eyes glanced back at the girl on the hill. She was still there.
I felt the tension in his body loosen a little as he was pulled out from the trance he was in. "Sorry, daydreaming." He murmed, shaking his head.
My gaze never leaving the body on the hilltop, I spoke quietly. "Don't be."
