My papa (grandfather) drove me to the front of UCLA.
In front of me I saw people scurrying around trying to find their dorms, parents waving their kids goodbye,
and people gathered in groups.
There was a group of skinny, tan girls who wore booty shorts and tight crop tops.
A group of tall jocks, shirtless, of course.
A group of kids who seemed to be studying.
And a group of boys skating and doing tricks to get the girls attention.
If I was going to make friends, it would be with the people who helped me get a good education and a good career.
"Bye Nessa, call whenever you want. We'll miss you sweetie." Ma (grandmother) said pushing back tears.
"And remember no fuckboys allowed in your dorm." Papa jokingly added.
Ma pocked him with her elbow causing all of us to giggle. We had a long warm hug before I had to let go and let them drive home. "I'll call y'all whenever I can, I love you." I said chocking back tears. They said their I love you's back and drove off.
I got my room key and went to find my dorm room.
When I went into my dorm,
which was abnormally large for just 2 people, I saw my roommate who had bleached blonde hair,
and a lot of mascara and shiny lipgloss on.
She seemed to be typing away on her laptop until she heard me close the door.
"Hi I'm Caitlin." she said getting her laptop and a textbook.
"I'm Vanessa."
"Sorry I really have to finish this essay on the Texas Revolutionary War before Professor Lloyd chews me out again, I'll talk to you as soon as I get back." Caitlin implies before quickly running out the door.
First day at UCLA and I already feel alone, great, I say thinking to myself.
I was unpacking my clothes and making my bed when I heard a bunch of boys in the hallways.
I opened the door to see the skater guys who each had a pair of what looked like volleyball uniforms. Around the corner I saw a group of girls soaking wet with nothing on them but a towel.
The volleyball team, I thought to myself and those douches took their uniforms while they were in the locker rooms showering.
Well quite frankly I did not want to be apart of this so I quickly hurried back into my dorm and shut the door behind me.
When I turned around I saw a boy sitting on Caitlyn's bed.
"Wow your roommate seems like a neat freak Cate." the boy said not looking up.
I was so confused and frustrated I didn't say anything instead I stood there.
When he realized I hadn't answered he looked up.
He was surprised to see me and not Caitlyn.
"Oh sorry i thought you were Caitlyn." he quickly apologized.
"She's not here right now and I am not a 'neat freak' I was just unpacking." I said.
"No need to get defensive." he laughs.
I couldn't help but smile at how cute and boyish his laugh was.
"Do you know when Cate gets back?" He asks.
"Sorry no, she didn't mention."
"Oh. well tell her to text me when she gets back alright?" He says while getting up.
"Sure."
"Oh. and umm, I wouldn't mind if you texted me too." he says winking before shutting the door.
Wow, what the hell just happened, I thought to myself.
