"I swear on my life, I know nothing!" Allen is sitting on my desk trying to scream-whisper. "I know all the gossip, and everyone just assumes you overslept." He shrugs his shoulders and hops off my desk quickly as he sees Mr. Mooney appearing from the office.
"Everybody wake up!" Mr. Mooney taps a pencil on a hanging light fixture to get everyone's attention. "The CEO will be swinging by. I don't know why, so don't ask me. I'm supposed to prepare you all to..." He stops and glances over a paper in his hand. "Not be idiots."
"Does it really say that?" One of the employees asks.
"No. It says to prepare workers for upper management arrival by emphasizing the importance of work place etiquette. The CEO, John Port, will be making an appearance with the expectation of a respectful welcoming."
"So that means...."
I hold my hand over my mouth to keep from laughing.
"Don't be idiots, Sharon. Get back to work."
A few hours later, a group of people I've never seen come off the elevator and start walking around the office. We are all silent, and strictly paying attention to our work.
"Do you enjoy working here?" I look up and a man in a nice suit is standing over me.
"Yes sir."
"Do you enjoy working for your boss?"
"I do. He's a good boss."
He smiles, and walks away. I glance around and see him entering Mr. Mooney's office. He takes a seat, and I watch their interaction. At the end, Mr. Mooney is either really happy or really upset. Sometimes it's hard to tell with guys like him.
I head home, and make sure to do the speed limit. I dial Jacey on the car phone as I pull onto my street.
"Sarah don't start."
I listen to Jacey breathe on the other end of the phone. Her quick breaths let me know she's still angry. I consider giving her a line of excuses. Instead I decide this may not be the best time.
"Look, I learned my lesson. Somehow my boss found out..."
"Your boss? How?"
"I don't know. Boss magic I guess. I won't make the same mistake again."
I flick a cigarette out the window and shut off the blue tooth in my car as I wait for a reply.
"I don't want you picking up Amy anymore."
"What the fuck?" I slam my door, and head up to my apartment.
"You have to get your life together. Kevin leaving was a huge blow, and I understand, but..."
Her words fade away as I come to my door and see a cop standing there.
"I need to call you back."
"Sarah? What's wrong?"
