"... How is she?" Chiara's voice was hesitant as she spoke into the phone. She was far too aware of the long night her brother had been going through, and even though on most days she might have not given a second thought about her brother's raging emotions. Today, however, was different. Chiara was aware how much her little brother cared for his family, and she had been talking to him periodically asking him how his wife, Avery, was doing because her labor had gone terribly wrong.
"I haven't heard anything yet... dio... Why haven't I heard anything yet?! What if she isn't okay?!" Obviously extremely worried for his wife and unborn child, Feliciano clutched the phone in his hand, as his golden eyes remained locked on the tiled floor in front of him. He was exhausted after being here for several hours with Avery; he had spent at least two of those hours alone sitting in the waiting room for any news of his wife and child since Avery had been rushed off to have an emergency c-section. However, even after two hours of waiting, no news came.
A sigh came from the other line, "Jesus, Feli, calm down. I am sure she is going to be just fine." From where Chiara stood she could see her nephew asleep on the couch. Her heart ached slightly at the thought of Niccolo having to go through something like losing his mother if things really weren't going to turn out all right. The poor child had already gone through his mother having to leave for a couple years with practically no notice. He had to grieve over his mother's disappearance as his father fell in love with another woman. Chiara knew that Niccolo had loved Feliciano's love after Avery, but she also saw the pain in the young boy's eyes when he saw his mother again. The abandoned feeling he had had rushed over him, but the desire to be in his mother's arms and being unable to shone heavily in his eyes. His mother had left him, but she came back only to be turned away by Feliciano who had fallen in love with another. That relationship never lasted and soon enough, Feliciano and Avery had gone back together, being a family again with their son. Niccolo was so young and had gone through so much, to lose his mother forever might actually take the spark out of his youthful eyes; Chiara didn't want to see that light in his eyes fade.
"How can I calm down?! I might lose her again! I might lose them both... Mio dio... mio dio..." Feliciano began to mutter Italian into the phone. His frantic, mumbled voice was incoherent and hard for his Italian-speaking sister to understand. The poor auburn haired man always went into Italian speaking mode when his emotions got the best of him. Like the time when Avery first went into labor, he went into an excited and panicked mode and was rapidly carrying on in Italian. This time was the same in his panic; however, the situation was different, far worse. This time there wasn't any excitement. His beloved wife could die, along with his child. His small family could quickly fall apart, and he wasn't prepared to lose his family; the thing he held so close and dear to his heart. Of course he had his son, Niccolo, but he was still walking a very thin line with the threat of losing the rest of his family. It terrified him more than anything, more than Allen, more than Nat when they first met. He was terrified of losing the ones he loved. If he lost them now, he would lose them forever.
"Calm down, fratello. She is going to be alright, just calm the hell down," Her attempt of comforting her brother was lost among his blurred together words on the other line. Feliciano's mind couldn't even register that his sister was even on the phone any longer; his mind and his worry were getting the better of him. The jumbled thoughts, that were rampaging through his mind, blocked out everything in the moment. His scattered attention caused him to not register his sister telling him goodbye because Niccolo had woken up from his slumber. He didn't notice himself move the phone from his ear and tuck it into his pocket. He didn't notice himself shoving his head into his hands as he tightly grasped at his hair in fear and frustration. It was all a blur that left his memory as soon as it entered. The world around him only slowed when he saw a petite nurse walking across the room to him.
