Here's chapter two of my book for school! Apparently next semester we're working on non-fiction, so I won't be able to use this book in class anymore.
Anyway, enjoy!

“I’m gonna miss you mom.” Felix hugs Mom tightly.

“It’s only going to be a few weeks. I need to go to this board meeting in California to meet other business owners.” She pats his head. “You’ll be fine.”

“I don’t want to lose another parent.” Felix just barely whispers.

   “... I know.”

“Bye, Mom.” I hug her around the neck, feeling her short black hair comfort me.

“As I said, it’ll only be a few weeks. Plus, you’ll be occupied with school. You’re already a junior. My babies are growing so old!” I let go and grab my suitcase. “I’ll see you soon!” I wave “bye” and grasp Felix’s arm and drag him through the terminal.

“Can we get some cheese sticks?”

   “On the plane.”

When we reach America, I sense something following me as we exit the airport. I look behind me to see a blimp of something. I blink a few times and don’t see it again. Confused, I chase after Felix.

“What was that?” He asks me, obviously noticing my strange behavior.

   “I thought I saw someone following us… I guess not. Let’s go.”

I wave down a taxi and look up the location of our new house. “Please take us to 83 W Hawthorne Rd. FL, 33617, thank you.”

The taxi driver spears the silence by asking us, “Your accent, you’re from Australia, right?”

   “Yes,” I reply.

   “Cool.”

We sit in silence till we reach the apartment, passing by a Nursing home/rehab center. That might be fun to work at, since Mom won’t be here for a few weeks I’ll be able to earn money and she won’t know!

“Here we are. That’ll be 25 dollars.” The taxi man says, turning around to face me and Felix in the back.

“Here.” I count through the bills, counting them until I reach twenty-five. I pass him the money.

   “Thanks! Have a good day!”

“Alright. Mom said that we’re in apartment 33 on floor 4.” I stare up at the tall white building. Windows on every floor. Open stairs allow easy access to all rooms. Palm trees surround the building and freshly cut grass guides the concrete sidewalk leading to the building.

“Let’s go!” Felix cheers, leaping into the air. I shake my head and smile.

Just as I’m about to cross the street, I spot a glimpse of someone with sickly skin, and dark clothes. I blink a few times just to make sure I’m not seeing things, then follow Felix.

I race up the stairs to see Felix standing next to a dark oak door with the number 33 on it in gold. There’s a lock box. “What’s the code?” Felix questions me.

“1228.” I say, looking through me and Mom’s texts.
The sound of beeping stops as Felix inputs the code and the numbers turn green. I can hear the lock unlocking and open the door. The fresh smell of paint hits my nose.

I look around. The hallway that I walked into is barren and white, the LVT flooring is a grey wood mixture. Two doors are on either side of the hallway, and I open the one on my right. There are two beds, striped bare. “Gonna have to get some sheets and comforters later.” I mutter. I think I saw a store on our way here. I continue down the hall and see a pocket door. Felix scares me by opening it. “Oof!” We crash into each other.

“Bruh,” I say, rubbing my nose since Felix’s chest is rock hard and he’s way taller than me. A lot of people are, actually.

“I’m going to lay on the bed. TTYL.” He makes a weird face then struts down the hallway, trying to be as sassy as possible. I just shake my head. “You’re very unique, you know!”

   “I know!”

I pass through the opening into the living room. Everything is white: the corner couch, the rug, the walls.

“We’re going to have to do some designing.” I say to myself. I walk through another opening to my right and see a good sized kitchen. There’s nothing in here except for the fridge, oven, sinks, and… A washer and dryer?

I head back to the room on the right and see Felix on his back with his phone above his face. My arrival startles him and he drops his phone on his face. “Ouch!” He exclaims. I giggle.

“It’s not funny! That hurt!” He rubs his red nose.

I start to unpack and since Felix has chosen the bed on the right, I go to the one on the left. I place all my stuff on top of it and start to unload.

As I finish I remember a nursing home down the street. “Hey Felix?”

   “What?” He mumbles.

“I’m going to head out and get the gist of this area.”

“Cool. Be back before the doordash that I ordered gets here.”

“You ordered doordash?! I want some!” I exclaim.

“Hold your kangaroos! I got you some extra spicy ramen with two boiled eggs. Just how you like it.”

I blush and smile sheepishly. “Oops.”

“Didn’t you say you were going somewhere?” Felix says, looking over at me, his pouty lips in a frown.

“Oh yeah… you really want me out of here don’t you?” I grab a white t-shirt with a slight v-neck, a pink fuzzy cardigan and light grey skinny jeans. I go to change in the bathroom then add some golden hoops and my checkered Vans and checkered sling purse as I head out the door. “I’ll be back soon!” I yell to Felix as I exit the apartment, jogging down the stairs.
