"Do you want to know a secret?"
Mason smiles, staring at Luke as the boy leans in closer, the smell of fresh mint and strawberries blessing his nose.
"Sure."
They sit on the dirty bathroom floor, in the corner of the handicap stall, quietly talking amongst themselves. Luke speaking was sudden, and only now does Mason realize it could be a number of things. Many of the thoughts Mason has about Luke tend to make his heart race fairly quickly.
But right now, for some reason, he's calm.
Luke's glassy, clear eyes look past Mason and his smile falls. He purses his lips with a laugh, but it sounds dry and wavery. Unlike the usual nectar it is. His laugh doesn't attract sunshine and butterflies.
It attracts a horrible gut feeling instead.
"I'm going deaf, too."
