I had a huge pain in my body that morning. It made me believe that it was
really me who met with the accident last night. My ribs were damaged and
the right hand wound and everything else. But it doesn't make any sense
does it? I do remember precisely that that unknown girl was crossing the
road, she met with the accident and it was me who actually took her to the
hospital. But it was all
so vice-versa by this morning. I was lying on the bed, solving this puzzle
when my mom's call interrupted me.
"BADGER?!" She sounded worried as hell. Does she know that I met with
an accident? Or is this something else?
"Yeah mom, what's up? You sound worried to me."
"Your principal called me this morning and he told me that you haven't
been to school for 2 days without any notice or message. I tried calling your
apartment and they told me you checked out last morning and haven't
come back yet. What is going on exactly? Are you alright? And I am on my
way to come and meet you."
Oh fuck... I really forgot that I have a school to attend.
"Oh, mom, no, everything's alright. You don't need to come here. I was just
not feeling well lately, so I decided to take a break for a short time but don't
worry about that because I'm fine now."
"Feeling not well lately and you didn't even tell me Badger. That's so bad.
And don't worry, I am already at the front door of your apartment so come
back ASAP."
"On my way mom."
I can't tell her that I was brutally injured last night, not on call because
that'd make her worried even more and god knows what she will do after
that. I remember the time my maternal grandpa died, and it took her 5
months to accept the reality of life and death and move on. If i tell her
about the accident all of a sudden then she might take me back to our
hometown Virgina or whatever.
Dr. Stallin told me that I was ok to leave now but I will need bed rest for the
next 24 hours or more. I checked out from the hospital and took a taxi to
my City Centre Apartment. While I was in the taxi, I was thinking about
that girl. Who was she or was she even real or what? I was thinking about it
so hard that I got a headache and i didnt want to look so pale in front of
my mom after telling her that everything was fine.
"We are here sir."
The driver said. I paid him off and left.
Mom was still at the reception centre waiting for me. She was absolutely
worried. I could tell that from her look. She ran towards me as soon as she
saw me, and hugged me.
"WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOU?" Those were her first words,
apparently.
"I'm sorry mom that i didn't tell you about this earlier. I was afraid that it'd
make you more worried. I had a car accident last night but it's fine now. I'm
fine now."
"Oh my god. What did the doctor say?"
"I just need 1 day of bed rest and that's it."
"You should really not hide something like this from me. What if you were
injured in a more bad way than this? At least give me a call if something
like this ever comes up."
"I am sorry mom. I will."
"It's fine sweetheart. I will take you to your room now."
I am not worried about going into my room anymore. Because my mom's
with me and she will be staying for now. After that 1st night experience of
getting caught by some hands, now was the time to move on from that
fear for me.
Mr. Charles was leaving for his office and we met him in the lift.
"Mrs. Hastings. Hey, what a surprise to see you."
He said
"Mr. Charles. It's nice to meet you too. Been a long time."
"Sure is." He looked at me, "What happened to you young man?"
"Oh, it was just an accident last night, but I'm fine now."
I replied.
"Oh my god, why didn't you call me Badger?"
"No, it wasn't that big of an accident Mr. Charles. So I didn't want to bother
you, and you are already worried about your mother anyway."
"That's bad Badger. No matter how busy I am, if anything comes up like
this ever, you call me okay?"
Mr. Charles did mean whatever he said. I knew it. Because he was really a
kind person to me since the day I moved in.
"That's so generous of you Mr. Charles. I really appreciate that. I am so lucky
that my son has got someone like you in his next door."
My mom replied.
"No problem Mrs. Hastings. Anything for this little fella." He smiled and
then he looked at his watch.
"If you will excuse me Mrs. Hastings. I actually have a meeting to attend
today." "Yeah of course. We will see you later then." We both shook hands
with Mr. Charles and then he left.
The lift pinged and it was floor 25th. I unlocked the door and we both went
into my room.
"What would you like to eat Badger?" Mom asked me.
"Ah, some pancakes. You're special."
My mom really makes a fascinating pancake. Anyone in the world would
love it without any doubt.
She got busy making pancakes and I was engaged in playing games. We
ate the meal and then talked about how everything was going on. Mom
asked me about my school and grades and how the people were in the
town. I decided not to tell her about my last two days because that'd make
me look crazy.
"I miss your dad whenever I am with you. I wish he was also here with us
and it will make us a family."
My dad passed away when I was in elementary school. It was a heart attack
and since then i have missed him more than anything else in the world.
"Me too mom. But he is always with us everywhere." I replied with a smile.
She nodded.
"Hey, can I go and take a walk to the City Centre Lake? I have always
wanted to go there from the time I got here but never got the time." I
asked.
"NO! Doctor told you to take bed rest for 24 hours, and that's what you are
going to do."
"It's not that far from here. Just 100 steps almost. And please mom, i really
want some fresh air." I tried to convince her. After after a little effort, she
agreed.
"But only for an hour, not even a single second."
"Agreed."
City Centre Lake is the most peaceful place of Gexo-City. It has a waterfall
and trees and everything. I sat near the waterfall. It was the most relaxing
thing I've ever experienced. It was now getting darker and my one hour
time was also about to reach its last second. I left the park and was waiting
for the taxi. I saw Mr. Charles returning from his office and waved at him.
He stopped his car and turn down his window.
"Hey Badger, need a ride?"
"Yeah Mr. Charles. That'd be a great help."
"Get in the car then." I did what he told me to do. I chose to sit in the back
seat because of the pain in my ribs.
"Mr. Charles. Is Andrew still here?"
I asked.
"No, he left earlier this morning. But why?"
"Nothing, I was just thinking that I could invite you and Andrew for dinner
tonight. You two have really been kind to me. And hey, my mom makes the
best food ever."
"I'm so glad to hear that Badger."
We reached our apartment. Mr. Charles looked at me and said, "You may
go now, I will follow you after parking the car."
I got out of the car and was going to my room now. Mom has already
cooked so much stuff tonight. It's smell was amazing, and of course far
better than my delivery boy's meal. I told her that I have invited Mr. Charles
for dinner tonight.
"That's great. I was also thinking about inviting him over?" And she smiled.
Mr. Charles arrived very soon and we were so happy to have him for dinner
tonight. Mom served the food for all of us and we started eating.
Mr. Charles told us about her mother. She is getting well now and her
recovery rate is also growing. I told my mom how gentle Mr. Charles is and
how we both became so close despite our age gap.
We all had a wonderful evening today. Mr. Charles said goodbye and went
into his quarter. My mom was washing dishes and I was using my phone. I
was already tired after the hospital and after strolling and sitting in the city
centre lake. I didn't realize when I fell asleep.
'Being normal is boring'. That's what we all say in our daily life. But what
happens when everything changes all of a sudden. Your normal life
becomes so abnormal that even you can't understand it.
I woke up. My head was dizzy. At first, when I opened my eyes, it was blurry
but then I regained my sight. My phone was ringing loudly. I rolled my
hand looking for my phone and got it. I didn't even look at who it was and
answered the call.
"BADGER?!"
Her voice was like mom's.
"Mom?" I replied as I was all awake now.
"Your principal called me this morning and he told me that you haven't
been to school for 2 days without any notice or message. I tried calling your
apartment and they told me you checked out last morning and haven't
come back yet. What is going on exactly? Are you alright? And I am on my
way to come and meet you."
Deja-Vu? That's what you think it was? No. At first, that was also my
conclusion, but when I looked around, I realized that it wasn't Deja-Vu.
I was in the hospital. Sitting on the very bench where a nurse came asking
me if I was okay about my wound.
"Excuse me?" Another nurse was standing right next to me.
"Yes?" I replied.
"I just wanted to tell you that the girl you bought here last night who had
an accident, is awake now."
