We were taking bp on the field when I heard my name called from the stands. I turned to see my dad walking down the stairs towards the net behind home plate. I checked to make sure I wasn't up for bp and walked over to say hey to my dad. "Hey, baby." "Hey daddy, how was the ride down?" I asked. "It wasn't terrible till Atlanta. You know how that traffic always is." My dad said, rolling his eyes. "I sure do daddy. Where's mama?" I asked, looking around. "Either the gift shop or the bathroom. Who knows." He said laughing. "Better go make sure your money's not all gone then," I said before I heard my name called. "I've gotta go, but I'll see y'all in a little," I said, jogging back.
"Is that your dad?" Dansby asked while we were walking back into the clubhouse. "Yeah, it was," I said "Does he intimidate you?" "Should he?" Dansby asked, looking nervous. "Well he's kind of a war veteran but he's a big softie if he likes you." "That's great," Dansby said walking over to his locker looking scared.
We ended up winning the game 7-4, which felt good after that insane call yesterday. I had even got a home run! We were in the locker room changing when Freddie came back in and said, "Ashlyn, are the two people out there waiting on you your parents?" "Yeah, that's them," I said, shaking out my hair since it'd been up for so long. "Well I think your mom is getting impatient," Freddie said laughing at me because I'd rolled my eyes. "She'll get over it I promise," "Well I see y'all tomorrow, bright and early," Freddie said as he turned to walk away. "What do you mean bright and early?" I asked making him turn around. "Don't you remember? Snit said he wanted us to come in for a meeting at 8:30 tomorrow." "That's awful." "Yeah, I know. Well, I better get going." Freddie said, actually walking away this time. "See you," I said to his retreating back. "I'd forgotten about that meeting too," Dansby said as we were walking out of the locker room towards my parents. I instantly saw Mom's face look upset, probably because I was walking with Dansby. Dad's face looked confused, but he really didn't care.
"Mom, Dad, this is Dansby. He's staying with me for a few days since a water pipe busted at his house." "Oh okay, honey. It's nice to meet you." My dad said, reaching his hand out for Dansby to shake. "It's nice to meet you, sir," Dansby said shaking Dad's hand. "Please call me Kevin," Dad said. He never was big on people calling him sir. He said it made him feel too important.
We left mom and dad at Dansby's truck when they went to find dad's truck. "Your mom didn't seem entirely happy about me staying at the house," Dansby said as we pulled out of the parking lot. "Yeah, she's probably not," I said, picking my phone up. "Hey, do you want to stop and get some food? I can call dad and see if they want anything," I asked, looking over at Dansby. "Are you giving me puppy dog eyes for food?" Dansby asked laughing at me. "Yes, we can go get food. Call your parents and see what they want from McDonalds," Dansby said. "Thank you," I said dialing my dad's number and smiling at Dansby.
Hey Daddy
Hey baby, everything okay?
Yeah, Dansby and I were going to go past McDonalds and grab some food and were wondering if y'all wanted anything
Mom said she was okay, but I'll take a quarter pounder if y'all don't mind
Alright, we'll see y'all in a little. There's a key above the door frame if y'all beat us home
Okay, love you
Love you, dad
Dansby's POV
I looked over at Ashlyn as we pulled into the McDonalds. "You know this is starting to become a nightly meal," I said as Ashlyn laughed and replied, "Snit would kill us if he knew," while laughing, "Yeah, I think it'd be safer to not tell him," I said as we pulled up to order. While we were waiting to pay, Ashlyn suddenly said, "Shit!" I jumped and looked over. "What?" "I completely forgot my brother and Sharon were coming down from Detroit tomorrow." "Your brother wouldn't happen to be Shane Greene, the pitcher for the Detroit Tigers would he?" I asked, putting the clues together. "The one and only dick," Ashlyn said as we pulled up to the window to pay and get our food. I handed the girl my card, and as she was handing it back, she said, "Wait. Aren't you Dansby Swanson?" I looked over at Ashlyn and saw the back of her head. "No you've got the wrong person," I said, reaching for our food. As we pulled past the window, Ashlyn turned back to me and started laughing. "What are you laughing for? And why'd you turn around?" I asked laughing with her. "Because if she recognized you, she'd probably recognize me, and then it'll be all over social media. Do we really want that right now?" Ashlyn said, grabbing a fry. "That's a fair point," I said pulling back onto the street.Ashlyn's POV
Dansby and I walked into my house to find Bentley and Lou stretched out next to each other on the couch. "Where are your parents?" Dansby asked, looking around. "They're probably in bed," I said, grabbing dad's food and walking to the guest room where there was a lamp on. "Hey daddy, here's your food," I said. "Thanks, baby," Dad said grabbing the bag and drink. "Night, love y'all," I said, walking towards the door. "Love you," Dad said.I walked back through the living room and into my bedroom and saw Dansby and the dogs stretched out, almost asleep. I got in bed and laid in Dansb's outstretched arm. "Your shoulders are really tense," Dansby said, kissing the top of my head as I let out a sigh. "Mhmm," I said. "Go to sleep baby," Dansby said, putting his arms around me and adjusting so I could put my head on his chest.
