Short Stories: Romance edition!

Story 3

I cried silently in the corner of our room. Mason was sitting on the bed with his head in his hands. "Ellie I-"

"How could you even consider going? You're leaving me!" I sobbed. He walked over to me and hugged me while I cried into his shoulder. After a while he said, "I'm not going."

"What?" I pulled away and looked at him. He started pacing around the room. "I'm not going. I can't. I can't just leave you here alone."

 
"But-but you have to! This is your big break, Mas'!"

 
"What, and I'll come back in two years to find you with some other guy?" He seemed to be angry now. "I can't do that to you. I can't do that to us! Who cares about my career! Who's gonna split your sandwiches with you cause you refuse to eat the whole thing? Who's gonna sing you to sleep on nights when you feel lonely? Who's gonna know exactly what to say when you've given up on life and can't do it anymore? I-" His voice broke. "I can't live without you, Ellie." He kissed me and then pulled me into a hug.

 I was gonna miss these arms around me. My safe place. "Mason?"

"Yeah?" He whispered.

"You need to go." He lifted his head, staring at a spot on the wall, silently. Finally he said, "I'm gonna miss you."

"I'm gonna miss you too," I said, the tears streaming down my face. "So much." My voice broke. I cleared my throat and said, "But this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I'm stopping you from taking that opportunity."

 
He pulled away. "Are you-are you breaking up with me?"

 
I hesitated. "I... don't know. I think we should take a break. A lot could happen in two years." I held my breath.

"Yeah, I know," he replied.

 I pull him into another hug. "I love you," he says.

"I love you too," I reply.

 
And we stand there for a while, holding onto each other, none of us wanting to let go.
