Thump. Tha-thump. Thump. Tha-thump. Zady stopped and froze midway down the wooden mission steps. Suddenly she was keenly aware of her own heart beating. Her head started to hurt and she closed her eyes. A flash of a deer, silhouetted by the bright sky...rocks...spinning...then an overwhelming sickly feeling. Blue sky. A rocky overhang that almost looked like....she felt a hand on her shoulder and opened her eyes.
"Zady Spencer, are you alright, child?"
It was Mrs. Alice.
"I--I--I," her voice caught in her throat. She felt herself stand up, dropping the basket of clothes she was carrying. She turned to face the kind Quaker woman.
"I think. I think I had one of them visions like Mama used to have!"
Mrs. Alice's eyes widened as her expression changed from confusion to worry.
"Come, child, come inside and tell me about it."
