Eric pounded his feet against the floor like a drummer pounded his sticks into his snare. He was running with everything he had in him. He whipped his head around and tried to hear the voices of the men behind him. There was a light murmur, or was that just the wind? It didn’t matter. They took Emily away from him, and he had every intention of getting her back.

They’ve been on the run ever since he met her in that small coffee shop a year ago. The men chasing them wanted Eric, and they got to Emily first. Eric was sloppy. he left a trail behind him. His parents would be disappointed, they taught him better.

“People will come after you, they have always been hunting us down.” His father’s words echoed through his head “You need to understand that. You need to be careful; you cannot afford to be sloppy. You cannot afford one mistake. Not one!”

Eric’s head whipped around again as he slowed his pace down until he stopped completely, panting hard from sprinting down the hallway. He found himself at an intersection in the long hallway that he’s been running down. This place was a maze, which way did Emily go? Two doors on either of his sides and continuation of the hallway in front of him. He looked at his watch. There was only ten minutes left before they’d be stuck there. Thud. Eric turned his head to the right. A sound came from the door to his right, a stairwell. He took a gulp of air before rushing towards it, kicking the door open before jumping in.

He saw her from the bottom of the stairs before she saw him. She turned and looked down at the sound of him entering the stairwell. He saw the look in her eyes and felt a twinge of sadness. Something was missing from them. He searched those green doors that led to her soul for something, anything that would signal that she would let him back in to let him take her hand and run away with him again, because without her everything was different. The world became de-saturated. Flowers wilted. The song carried on but with a sadder, lonelier tune.

She tried with no avail to try and figure out why this dark haired man was staring at her so intensely. Did she know him? Maybe in a past life or something. There was desperation and heartbreak in his eyes. It made her want to cry, she could tell that he was heart broken “but from what?” she wondered. She felt uneasy. He was breathing heavily, there wasn’t much time before they’d catch up to him and he couldn’t lose her. Not again. He made his way up the stairs, his heart beating like a bass drum in his chest. She was different. Something has happened to her, she doesn’t remember him. He parted his lips and let three syllables slip out.

        “Emily?” He asked.

“Yes? Do I know you?” she answered. His hear shattered.

“Apparently not” he muttered half to himself and half to Emily. He offered a weak smile to her before passing her in the stairwell.

It was weird. She knew she had seen him before, but she couldn’t remember where exactly she did. There was a faint memory in the back of her head. A dark haired man taking her hand and saving her from danger. She felt a memory coming back but it was hazy. It couldn’t be…could it-THUD! Suddenly the door at the bottom of the stairwell flew open. The memory Emily stared to remember faded quickly. Men started to pile in and shout the man’s name. He looked down at the men that were starting to rush up the stairs, then to Emily. Time was running out and he needed her for the world to feel normal again. She he rushed back to her, grabbed her and said,

        “Run”
