"Okay, so I've got some ideas," Luna says as soon as Matteo's within earshot.

"Good morning to you, too," he chuckles, setting his guitar down on the grass and handing Luna the coffee he brought for her. "I didn't know what you liked, so I got whatever looked like it had the most sugar in it."

Luna rolls her eyes. "Thank you."

"So whatcha thinking?" Matteo asks her, taking a seat on the bench.

"You're gonna think I'm crazy-"

"I already do."

Luna rolls her eyes again. "Very funny. But seriously, I was up last night and recorded some voice notes of some little things I've been working on."

"Let's hear it," Matteo nods. He's grateful for her apparent work ethic, especially considering all he did last night was play video games with Simón. "Whatcha' got for me?"

Luna giggles softly to herself, digging her phone out of her pocket and clicking play on one of her voice notes. A familiar tune started to play, and Matteo's eyes grew wide.

"Hey- that's my song," he gasps, a small smile forming on his lips. "You put words to my song?"

Luna looks down. "You were humming it that day a few weeks ago, and it's been in my head since then," she admits, locking and unlocking her phone as a way to avoid looking up. Was she crazy? Why was she up all night putting words to a song by a boy she's worked with for less than a month? "Sorry, we can totally do something else I just thought that maybe it would be fun because you already knew the tune and then we'd both have a part in it and...," she rambles on.

Matteo rushes to get her to stop talking, "No, no, it's fine," he says. "Play it again."

Luna takes a deep breath and presses play again, suddenly noticing how shaky her hands are. How much sugar was in that coffee? She can't help but notice how Matteo's eyes find hers in the middle of the song, and she quickly blinks to get herself to look away. She coughs, "So, uh, yeah."

She looks back up to find Matteo's eyes still fixated on hers. She chokes out a breathy giggle.

He didn't know if it was the excessive caffeine in his veins, or the lyrics coming out of Luna's mouth over the audio, or the way her green eyes reflected the early morning sunlight, but Matteo had the sudden urge to kiss her.

He really wanted to kiss her.

A girl he'd met barely a few weeks ago.

Luckily, before he has the chance to do something he'll regret- something he'd really most likely fuck up- he feels a hand on his shoulder.

"Hey guys!" Pedro's voice is strong and enthusiastic, also oblivious to the the moment Luna and Matteo were sharing.

Matteo breathes a sigh of relief, thanking the timing gods for saving him on that one. What was he thinking? Was he really about to kiss her?

"Hey Pedro," Luna's voice is a little shaky, and she's praying that neither of the two boys can notice. She has a million thoughts running through her mind, including, but not limited to: What just happened? Was Matteo about to kiss her? Was she going to let him? Why did Pedro have to show up? "We were just, uh..." her voice trails off, hands fidgeting.

"Rehearsing," Matteo finishes. "For the showcase."

Pedro nods. "Right." He glances at the guitar and Luna's phone, still open to the voice note. "Anyway, uh, I was out for a walk and figured I'd stop by to say hey. So hey."

"Hey," Matteo forcefully smiles up at his friend, squinting in the sunlight. Normally he'd be all for a quick run-in with his best friend, but he and Luna were finally getting somewhere.

With the song.

"I'll uh, see you at band practice later, right?" Pedro asks, rocking on his heels, suddenly sensing the tension.

Matteo nods, "For sure."

Luna lets out a breath she didn't know she was holding as soon as Pedro's out of ear and eyeshot. "Well, uh," she starts. "I'll see you later." She's gone before Matteo has a chance to say anything.
