WANDA HAD ONLY ever done a undercover mission once since she's joined after the incident in Sokovia. Steve said there would be a lot more as her time as an Avenger, but she didn't think her second mission undercover would be by herself in a huge ballroom on a cruise.
She felt like a dull rock in a pile of rubies and amethysts. Even though she was wearing a beautifully tailored dress, she couldn't feel more out of place. But she had to stay focused on the mission. Find the girl, take her in, and interrogate her. As much as she hated it.
Wanda started to look around at all the people that were waiting for the auction to start. She then saw a girl with her hair in two complex braids with a stunning black dress with stars sprinkled along the skirt of the dress. The girl had a neutral expression on her face as she looked up at the shimmering chandelier.
It wouldn't hurt to talk to her, Wanda thought as she walked towards the girl. She doesn't look like a potential threat.
"Wanda, what are you doing?" Natasha's voice rang over the communication unit.
"What, can I not talk to people on missions now?" Wanda asks as she stopped in her tracks. She cursed under her breath. There was no way she could talk to Mystery Girl, now. She was gone in an instant.
"You can find who you're looking for and apprehend her," Natasha shot back.
Wanda sighed, knowing that Natasha was right. She couldn't let herself get distracted by the people around her. She had a mission to complete. She made her way through the crowd, scanning the faces of the guests for any sign of her target. As she walked, she couldn't help but think about the girl she had seen earlier. There was something about her that had caught Wanda's attention.
But she pushed those thoughts aside and focused on her mission. Her eyes wandered back to the place where Mystery Girl was. She then heard static on the communication unit. She pressed the button again and heard Steve's struggling voice.
"I got her," he grunted out. Wanda heard a female voice struggling in the background. "Everybody move out without making a scene."
Wanda's heart raced as she weaved through the crowd and out the door. Once outside, Wanda quickly scanned the area for any signs of danger. She couldn't see anyone following her, but she still felt on edge. She knew that she had to get as far away from the building as possible.
—•—•—"They what?" Clove heard Pan's low voice asked. Look who's in trouble now. "What do you mean they took her?"
"They apprehended Selene," Ezra said, his voice calm. "Or at least I saw two of the Avengers that did."
Clove watched as Pan's fearsome eyes met with Ezra's. Pan was one of the most loving and horrific creators in all of HYDRA but she wasn't afraid to inflict punishment on her children when she feels it is deem appropriate to.
I created you, ALL OF YOU," Pan shouts, "to be the best assassins in your unit with outstanding abilities, so imagine my dissatisfaction when I find out that one of our own gets caught by the Avengers."
Clove shifted uncomfortably, feeling the weight of Pan's disappointment. They had all been trained to be the best of the best, and yet they had failed to protect one of their own.
Ezra stepped forward, his voice steady. "We'll get her back," he said. "We won't leave her there."
Pan's eyes flickered with something that looked like hope. "How?" she asked.
Ezra's lips quirked in a small smile. This would be a good time for Clove to be scared, but she couldn't feel it. "I have a friend," he said. "He owes me a favor. I think he can help us."
Clove watched as Pan's expression softened slightly. "Okay," she said. "Let's do it."
Clove felt a surge of relief. They had a plan. They could get Selene out. But she also knew that it wouldn't be easy. They would have to move quickly and quietly, or else risk getting caught themselves.
