The flash of bright blue cut through the mostly gray backdrop as the boy ran through the woods, a pit in his stomach his breath heavy as he ran the cold and snow made it no better but he ran, not sure why he was running but it just felt like the right thing to do. Voice shouted after him as he ran. Fuck he mumbles to himself as he speeds up, now he remembered why he was running, the cold nipped at his face like tiny needles pricking into his skin. The thin jacket he wore didn't help much, it was mid-December the snow was coming down hard and the woods became covered in a blanket of white, his boots sinking into the freshly fallen snow with every step. The shouting continued as he closed his eyes trying to run faster, he had no clue where he was anymore the woods looked all the same in the snow and it wasn't a good idea to get lost this time of the year he could die out here before someone found him, but freezing to death seemed like a better idea than whatever those kids were going to do to him. That's when he heard it, a loud bang the kind that makes your life flash before your eyes the cold and adrenalin must have taken over as he didn't feel the bullet ripping thru his right shoulder.

The next few minutes were a blur. When the pain finally kicked in he was hit by a wave of dizzy running into something, now he lay there in the once white snow now being slowly covered in a warm crimson, the snow stung his skin but it was a feeling he didn't seem to mind anymore staring up at the trees too tired to get up and keep running. The blood kept climbing over the snow as the voices came closer.

"Fuck man you weren't supposed to kill him."

"I-I didn't mean to!"

The rest of the conversation was a blur to him as he somewhat lost consciousness all he remembers is some man yelling in the hospital hallway. The rest was nothing like he was floating he swore this is what it must feel like to die. He lay there in the state of floating in space for what felt like forever, when he finally woke up his parents weren't there, but a man who he had never met before, a tall man with long black hair and amber eyes. He goes to sit up groning slightly having forgotten he'd been shot. The man looked over at him with a sigh of relief,

"You're awake, um let me get a doctor." He says stepping out for a second calling someone over who started checking him over.

"Wh-what happened?" He asks, still very confused.

"You were shot in the woods, you didn't have any id on you mind telling us your name?" the doctor asked

"Eli...Elijah Hunt." He mumbles head swimming with memories.

"Alright Elijah, you have any family we can call for you?"

"Ye-yeah...My foster parents." He mumbles telling him a number as the doctor leaves to call them.

"I'm Matteo by the way, I found you in the woods." the man says now standing by his bed. "What were you even doing out there?"

"I don't even remember, it all just hurts to think about." Eli mumbles, closing his eyes. Matteo nods with a sympathetic smile.

"I have to get to work, but I'll check on you later, ok?" He says grabbing his coat. Eli gives a nod not sure why the other cared so much but he wasn't really complaining. After Matteo left Eli was left alone other than a nurse that came in every so often that was till an older couple with a little girl came in them being Eli's foster family he sighs slightly waiting to get one of his 'dads' talks. But instead, he just looked sad.

"What's with the look?" Eli asks with a slow tired blink the little girl ran over hugging him.

"Elijah you could have died out there, your lucky someone found you." The woman says walking over to his bed the man still standing by the door.

"Eli, you need to shape up. I don't like getting calls that my son was shot." The man says with a sigh.

"You make it seem like I wanted to get shot, not my fault this town is full of bigots." He sighs, laying his head back.

"And it's not our fault you're not normal." The man snaps, Eli's mom looks at her husband with a look of disappointment.

"This is not the time for that, just be happy he's alive." She says, the man rolls his eyes looking at his watch.

"I have to get to work, I'll see you all later." He huffs leaving. Eli sighs rubbing the little girl's head looking at his mom.

"I didn't mean to." He says she ruffles his head with a bittersweet smile.

"Just rest ok love?" He gives a nod, the little girl cuddling him as his eyes close slightly.

Eli stayed in the hospital room for about a week, though to him it felt like years. The boredom of watching those four white walls drove him crazy, and that guy never came back. Not that Eli paid attention, it was the last week before winter break when he was discharged. His mother refused to let him go back to school which he was glad about, he didn't want to run into those kids again. So he spent the week watching after his little sister while his parents worked.

That was till one day he got tired of sitting around the house all day doing nothing, his sister was asleep and he didn't see a problem with going on a short walk. He grabbed his coat and boots and headed off. It wasn't snowing all too hard now and the old snow crunched under his boots, he wandered the streets for half an hour or so. Now starting to get dark when he heard a faint voice from behind, a voice he knew all too well. Without thinking he booked it down the street making sure to stay away from the woods, he didn't want to get cornered again. The person ran after him but was much slower, even so, he sped up not wanting to risk it. He glanced around for a shop or ally to duck into when out of nowhere he was grabbed and yanked into the cut out of a shop a hand quickly put over his mouth to quiet him.
