My sister used to wake me up in the mornings. She used to be excited when I would "volunteer" to help her get ready.

The truth is, my mother would either be drunk or beaten badly somewhere so she wasn't eligible for raising her second daughter. Nor her first. I blamed myself a lot for my childhood years. I thought that my mother's inadequateness was my doing. I thought that when her boyfriends would slap us around, that it was my fault.

That is until she met Rick Young. He arrived bearing a son who didn't share the same pigment as us nor last name. However, he knew just how to make it work, for him.

He saw our flaws and caressed them in his materialistic hands until the scars were freshly made out of money. Rick also knew how to pick at those scars until fresh blood came pouring back out of him. My little sister never knew much about Rick. Hide and Seek was just a game to her. The times we ran away from the house were all just a game to her. We tried to get away from him. Rick was slowly killing us, with money.

It made me grow closer to my mother. I was used to the hard treatment and neglect. Rick gave her the opportunity of stepping into my shoes for the first time. It made me like her more. She was getting bit in the ass and it was humbling to her. Along with Rick came Dakota's blind-sided view on how great his father was. Bless his heart. The truth is Rick just like my mother both share a hatred for the boy that stems back to his biological mother. Unfair it is, nevertheless, Dakota is the only boy that Rick has. I was able to leave the house before they drove Dakota to madness. But it seems granted he moved in with me that he broke them first. Meanwhile, Charlotte complains about mother now. But she thinks this behavior is new. She's stupid.

"Marigold?"

A head peers in my doorway. It's Macy. She's wearing a lovely olive green coat and dark blue jeans. Her brown hair is pulled into a high ponytail that gives her a refreshed and clean look.

"Yesss?" I hum back, my eyes staying glued to my computer.

"I was in the neighborhood and decided to drop off some kitty treats for Gus." She spoke again, this time stepping into my room. Out of the corner of my eye, I peered at her place the treats on my dresser before turning back to me.

"Thank you, Macy, that was really considerate of you. I'm sure Gus will enjoy them." I spoke closing my laptop.

Macy's face rapidly grew into one of confusion as she tried to find the right words to say.

"Wait-what?" She stuttered "You would have shooed me out of your apartment by now? Did something happen?"

"No."

Yes, I had a run-in with a complete stranger and I'm still fearing for my life.

I smiled once I finished my white lie.

Macy awkwardly nodded before looking at my bedroom door.

"Well I'm going to head out now anyway, I have a date tonight." She excused herself from the exchange.

"Where is he taking you?" I questioned referring to her new fiance Andrew.

A kid-like smile grew on her freckled face "To watch the sunset."

I smiled at her "That's so cute. He's so creative."

"He is." Macy nodded.

A part of me dies as she agrees with my words stabs a knife through my chest. I wish I had someone who was creative like Andrew. Or at least assertive...

"Let me walk you to the door." I figured I could use the short exercise.

She gratefully nodded which prompted me to rise from my bed and lead her to the front door.
