“Why are you acting as if this is my fault?!”
“Because it is!”
“How?”
“You’re the one who’s not normal, not me, you’re the problem!”
“Well last time I checked, you’re the one who asked me out and you’re the one who decided to propose!” Angela’s voice cracked as she spoke, “if I’m the problem then you can have your stupid f*cking ring back!” The woman forcefully wrenched the diamond ring from her finger and threw it. I dove to the floor, searching for the microscopic ring. From my place on the floor, Austin could hear the clicks of the door being unlocked. “Where are you going?” Austin rounded the corner to the foyer to see my fiance swing the door open, a suitcase in hand. “To the hotel a few miles away.”
“Why?”
“Why?! Because I’m the problem, right?”
“You know I didn’t mean that, I was upset.”
“Have you ever thought that maybe I get upset too?” No, he hadn’t. “I want this to work, Austin, but you need to realize that you’re not the only person sacrificing something for this relationship!” She walked out the door and slammed it shut. ‘I can’t just let her leave.’ I unlocked the giant door, “you’re overreacting.”
“Am I?” Angela shouted back, red hair whipping around her face. I hesitated before stepping outside, “Angela, come back inside I don’t want to have to grab you.”
“You sound just like my dad.” Step dad more specifically, that hurt. A lot.
“I am nothing like him!”
“Then why are you acting like him?”
“I-I’m not” I slammed my hand in front of the tiny woman before she could make it to her car. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, “Austin, please move your hand.”
“No, I’m not letting you leave. It was a silly little argument Ang-”
“Silly?! What about that that was silly?!” She was crying now, eyes glossed over. “Is it that you called me a freak?”
“I never called you that”
“No, you only said I’m not normal, right? Or is it that you made me feel as guilty as possible for not being able to have kids? That’s hilarious isn't it?! Let’s all laugh at the fact that I’ll never be good enough for you, because you cant f*ck me!” My cheeks grew red at seeing some of the neighbors peeking out their doors. “We should go inside.”
“No,” Angela tried walking around my hand. “Ah! A-Austin, put me down!” I wrapped my hand loosely around my fiance. I hated grabbing her. “Put me down!” I ignored her until I stepped back into the house and closed the door. “Please calm down, I don’t want to drop you.”
“Put. Me. Down.” I set her gently on the pillow on our bed. Her feet sunk into the plush surface, making her fall, she didn’t seem to care. The human tucked her knees to her chest and began to sniffle. “Angie~”
“Don’t touch me!” She smacked my fingers
“Stop acting so childish, let’s talk about this.” She clearly did not want to talk, in fact, she proceeded to turn her back to me and lay down. “Angie? Can we please not do this right now?” She didn’t move but I could still hear her sniffling. “Babe?” I crawled into bed with her, resting my head on the pillow next to the one she laid on. I pressed my lips to her back, “love you.” She shifted ever so slightly. Maybe I should have let her go, she probably would’ve been back within a few days. Regret quickly found its way into me, I watched the human lay motionless. I knew she was asleep, her breaths were slow and even.
