There's a enough reasons why Indigo hates high school to fill a book, but lately, there's really only been one reason that's climbed its way to the top of the tower. Mahogany and Ultramarine.
Sitting in the back of the class, Indigo has no choice but to either stare at his own muddied reflection through the window that his desk was parallel to, or to watch the couple flirt with each other, touch each other, and laugh quietly, and he couldn't stand it. Watching Mahogany be so happy with someone else completely crushed his self esteem like a crumpled piece of paper. He liked to think that he deserved to be in Ultra's shoes; imagining what it would be like to feel Maho's skin, to have her comfort and companionship. But another part of him knew that she was making the right decision to avoid him. Especially after what had happened the Thursday before.
Indigo slumped into his chair, watching raindrops race each other to the bottom of the window and counting the seconds until this miserable class ended.
"Indigo, why did you think Homer decided to write this simile? What is it emphasizing about Odysseus's journey?" Indigo is pulled back into reality by his teacher, who glared at him expectantly. He gripped onto the cold metal of his desk, which he had been scribbling and doodling on since class had started.
Not a word came out of Indigo's mouth, like usual. He refused to answer any questions.
"Hey, dollar-tree. I think he's talking to you." An obnoxious voice sounded from the front of the classroom. It was Carmine, of course it was Carmine. "Oh, wait. He's mute. Yikes."
"Hey, don't talk to him like that, /sshole. He isn't bothering you." Mahogany defended Indigo. He looked up at her with gratitude. Maybe she was still okay with him.
"Both of you, calm down, or take a breather outside." The teacher sighed.
Mahogany looked back at Indigo and gave him a sympathetic smile, which grabbed and pulled at his heart strings hard. He suddenly hated this class a whole lot less, but the feeling was followed by sadness as soon as Ultra placed a protective hand on her shoulder and looked away.
His mind kept slipping to last Thursday, in study hall. He remembered it all so clearly, so vividly, and it hurt him. The first cut had always been the deepest.
Indigo's eyes closed and his head rested gently on his desk, waiting for the day to finally be over. His mind dragged him to the one place he didn't want to be: The roof of the apartment complex Mahogany stayed at, both of them watching dusk turn into night.
"Alec, you know I don't want to have to do this. But we can't keep meeting up like this."
His heart sunk into his chest as he looked at Maho desperately. "What? I thought you liked this." He felt his whole body begin to feel dizzy each time she scooted a bit farther away from him.
"Me and Ultra are thinking of getting serious. I don't want to hurt him."
"You can choose me, Maho. You like-- you like me. We like each other. We don't have to commit-" Indigo spoke profusely, letting his mouth run before he could even think about what he was saying.
Maho put her hand up to Indigo's mouth, shutting him up. "I like him, Alec. I like how he makes me feel. I don't feel bad when I'm with him."
With each breath he took, Maho's words cut deeper into Indigo, hurting him more and more. He couldn't cry-- not in front of her. "...you feel bad when you're with me?"
Maho stayed silent, which was all Indigo needed for an answer. He got up, letting the breeze run through his long hair. "Fine. I wish you and him the best. Genuinely. But I can't say that I agree or respect your decision."
"...I know. I know. I'm sorry it had to end up like this, Alec-"
"I should get going. It's getting late."
"I'm sorry, Alec."
"I know." Indigo said with a shaky breath. He had already turned away from Maho. It was time for him to leave.
He woke up to the bell ringing loudly, which practically shook him awake. He got his stuff ready and left, taking his backpack out of his locker and heading out into the parking lot to his car. What stood in the way, however, was exactly what he didn't want to see: Maho and Ultra.
They were far enough away so that they didn't notice him, but he noticed them. Holding each other close together with their arms intertwined, looking at each other with pure compassion. The pain in his chest welled up to his head and eyes and he felt beads of water form along his eye, glazing it over.
He got into his car and drove away as fast as he could.
