Chapter 3
"I can't believe this!" Suzie screamed as her dad told her what was planned for today.
He was going to force her to go downtown and walk through those stupid museums.
I will not go down there, they're lame!" She yelled as she slammed her bedroom door. But her dad was insistent until she finally dragged herself out of the house.
"I'll go, but I won't like it" She groused, giving her dad her most evil stare, one that shot daggers that could kill.
Suzie slouched down in the passenger seat and looked mean the whole ride into the city. She didn't even break a smile when her dad began to serenade her with his favorite song."You've lost that loooving feeling, oh yeah." He crooned to the Righteous Brothers.
"Father, that is not funny, and you cannot make me laugh," Suzie said quite firmly and looked away, hiding the slightest grin."I'm just trying to make you feel more comfortable with here, Sweetie." He said. "It's been two months since we got here and all you've done is mope and complain. I hate to see you like this."
"That's because this place sucks, Dad! You didn't ask for my opinion before we moved. Why can't we go back to Hong Kong, I had lots of friends there, and it was so much fun.""Maybe too much fin, huh? Considering your grades?" Her father asked with a raised brow. "This place can be fun too, Honey. You just have to make it fun. A home is what you make of it."
"Whatever." She said ending the conversation.Suzie hated the idea that she was being forced to be here. She hated even worse the idea of being seen with her dad, especially walking through some lame museum. She just knew this was gonna suck. Hopefully, it would at least go by quickly, if she were lucky.
After parking the car, her dad thought it would be a great idea to stroll down the Mall and enjoy the weather. All Suzie could think was that it was nasty hot and humid. Finally, after an eternity, they reached the Holocaust museum, their first stop.
"Yeah Dad, this place is going to be a blast! I can't wait to see how much fun this will be."
"Don't be disrespectful. It's about time you started paying attention to history. This is important stuff. Your great-grandmother lived through this, it's only right that you learn a little bit about what she dealt with."
"Well, I'm not going to like it, I can promise you that," Suzie said with a huff as she crossed her arms.
"Now remember, look both ways before you cross the street and hold my hand." Her dad said as he looked down at her and smiled sarcastically. She didn't even look at him as she started across the street. She was so mad at him for making her do this and then being snide about it and mocking her. It wasn't until halfway across the intersection that she heard the screeching of tires. Suzie never even thought twice about it, it was a common occurrence in all of the major cities she'd lived in. Her attitude changed when she heard the engine rev up and finally looked to see a car barreling down right at her.
Suzie didn't have time to react; she just stared at the hood ornament as it raced toward them. It was her dad that finally woke her from her stupor, pushing her into motion.
"Run, Suzie!" Her dad yelled as he shoved her toward the sidewalk.
They both broke into a dead sprint as they raced toward the crowd at the edge of the road. Suzie ran deep into the crowd of people before she turned around. Her dad was just reaching the edge of the sidewalk when Suzie saw the car again. It was a sleek, black car with some silver winged guy on the hood, and it was suddenly veering into the people right in front of them.
"Look out Dad!" Suzie screamed at the top of her lungs.
Her panicked stare got her dad's attention. He looked over his shoulder to see the crowd scattering around him and the black car aimed directly for his back. Suzie rushed into the first doorway that she found before she turned back around to find her father. She saw him right away racing down the sidewalk, but the car was gaining on him quickly-too quickly.
Her dad was weaving and veering around the parking meters and other people trying to somehow evade the car. But it kept coming and coming faster.
Without any warning, the car sped up and bumped her dad in the legs. Suzie screamed out with fear in her eyes, not knowing what else she could do.Her father was running as fast as he could, but he was fighting a losing battle. It seemed as if the driver was playing games with him as the car moved forward and bumped him again. The third time it nipped his legs, Suzie's dad tripped and fell to the sidewalk.
Before she could blink, Suzie saw her dad fall to the ground and get pulled under the wheels of the car. The driver never slowed down as the car swerved back onto the street and raced off into the distance. Suzie launched out of the doorway and ran toward her dad's crumpled body. Everyone around the scene of the accident was on their cell phone trying to get an ambulance there as quickly as possible, but it was already too late.
