I opened the car door for June. She climbs out and I take her arm in mine. As we walk up the stairs to the door soldiers salute us and even open the door for us, it's good they know who we are. I lead her into the large ballroom and I can see everyone staring at us. The gala itself was a celebration for the capture of Day. I can't say I'm surprised that June is the one who ended up catching him, she's probably better than Metias was. The room was packed full of men in uniforms and women in fancy dresses.
I looked down at June and noticed that she was glancing around the room, her dark eyes reflecting the lights, the gold flecks surrounding her pupils almost barely visible. June was wearing a corset, sapphire dress that was lined with tiny diamonds. Though her dress was not very expensive, it fit her tightly and defined her body beautifully. Her dark brown hair was neatly combed and draped across her back.
After I had grabbed a drink from the bar June and I started to wander around the ballroom. Occasionally I caught people staring and whispering about us but at the moment I didn't care at all. A couple of times June would look up at me, she thought I didn't notice but I could feel her movements. Some of those times I would look down at her and our eyes would meet, I would blush and she would divert her gaze.
"I wish Metias could have seen this. He would have loved it." June says without looking up.
"Yeah," I responded, "you miss him a lot don't you?"
"Yeah, I think finally arresting Day helped with the pain," June replies. I look down and see the sadness in her eyes.
"I'm glad you're relieved, at least Day's good for something." I see an expression flash across her face, so quickly that I almost miss it. She starts to step away and I grab her arm, She pulls away further. Just outside my reach.
As we continue to explore the festivities I start to feel June becoming more uncomfortable with all the people whispering and staring. I try to take her attention off of everyone and keep our conversation going.
"The commander informed me that they'll sentence Day tomorrow morning," I say after we greeted a captain from the Emerald sector. June turns away when I speak but turns her head back to respond.
"So soon?" She says.
"The sooner the better, right?" I say, anger slightly seeping into my voice as I respond.
"And to think you were forced to spend so much time in his company. I'm amazed he didn't kill you in your sleep. I'm-" I pause, deciding it was best to not finish that sentence.
"Those street cons are all the same," I say remembering what June said to Day while in his cell.
"Did you hear Day's sick brother, the little one, tried to spit on Commander Jameson yesterday? Tried to infect her with whatever mutated plague he's carrying?"
"Tell me," June says, stopping to face me.
"What exactly does the Republic want with that boy? Why take him to the hospital lab?" June asks.
I take a minute to choose if I should tell her or not and then respond in a low voice. "I can't say. Much of it is confidential. But I do know that several generals from the warfront have come to see him." June frowns at that.
"They came just for him?" she questions.
"Well many of them are here for a meeting of some sort. But they did make a point of stopping by the lab."
"Why would the warfront be interested in Day's little brother?" She says after a moment.
I shrug, "If there's something we need to hear about, the generals will tell us."
