"Hey."
Even though he tried not to scare him, Liam's head shot up, eyes wide with panic. After a second his scent changed from relieved to cofused, something that Theo could easily smell from afar.
"Hey..." He whispered back, brows shrinked in small frown.
Theo walked a few small steps closer. The young beta looked tired. His hair was messy and he had dark circles under his eyes. The clothes looked more loose than couple of hours earlier. His blue eyes eyed him suspiciously. Theo couldn't help himself but notice that his scent and heartbeat were all over the place. He almost scoffed. So open.
"Liam, right?" He asked innocently and tilted his head to the side.
Liam Dunbar, 16 years old, diagnosed with IED. The angry beta of the McCall's pack. Theo could recite his whole biography if he wanted to. He knew a lot of stuff about every single member of the glorious pack, from their family backround through school credit to how they liked their coffee. He knew everything. But now, as he was looking at the young boy in front of him he pushed all of this in the corner of his spy brain.
"Yeah...Wh-What are you doing here?" Liam was an open book. That was the first thing Theo noticed. He didn't even try to get a hold of his chemosignals nor heartbeat. But older boy wasn't the one to complain. It was making all of this easier for him.
Theo ignored his question and moved to the fence, so he was standing in front of the younger boy. He reached to his pocket, amused as he saw Liam's eyes follwing his movements, and pulled out a cigarette.
"Got a lighter?" He asked already knowing the answer. Still, he let out a disappointed sigh when beta shook his head. Theo put the cigarette into his mouth and light it all while watching Liam closely. The boy was clearly miserable.
"You good?" Theo exhaled and filled the air between them with smoke. Liam didn't even flinch, didn't move a muscle. Impressive.
"No."
"Such an honesty." Theo remarked, voice quite bitter. Liam's lips switched into something that could be a small smile.
"You asked."
Theo took another deep breath of smoke. This had to work out. That meant clearing the air and getting rid of beta's wary posture.
"Come with me." He said after a beat of silence. He didn't wait for an answer. He just turned around, filled his lungs with smoke again, started to walk towards his truck and maybe, just maybe, let his heart skip a beat when he heard the other boy following him without hesitation.
...
Theo expected the drive to be in silence. He wasn't sure who was surprised more, he or Liam, when his mouth opened and he asked:
"So, what happened?"
Liam's scent deepen as he twitched in his seat. The frown was back on his face and Theo also didn't miss the way how he bit his lower lip and clenched his fists.
"It's my best friend, Mason. I-" Liam took a deep breath, "He didn't know about the whole supernatural thing. I told him today."
Theo felt the way too familiar smug feeling taking over his body. So we are sharing now. With this pace he will have peaceful Christmas. He tighted his grip on steering wheel and looked at Liam with worried expresion.
"How did it go?"
Did it work?
"Better than I expected. " Liam huffed out a sad laugh.
It didn't.
"He didn't scream, he didn't run away. He had a lot of questions but... He didn't run away. We're good" Liam continued, his eyes glittering a little.
