'Aaron you can't be serious?'
'I'm afraid I am. You have no idea how I wish that wasn't the case but that's the truth,'
'We can surely do something. What if we squeeze them in?' Even as I asked that question I doubted myself. The hospital wasn't that big and was already over packed. If a contagious disease were to spread right now then it's safe to say three quarters of the village would perish. People were hurt and homes were lost. Everyone's eyes were full of despair.
'We have already broken protocol. Look around. Every wards room has four patients. Two on the bed two on the floor. Even the hallways are filled with patients. It's like three quarters of the village is here. To make matters worse we do not have enough equipment. '
'What do we do now? Things can't stay like this,'
'That's why I'm saying we should let the better ones go.' I get the position he is in. I understand that as a doctor he is trying to save as many as he can but while his idea might look Ideal it will put more at risk. The roads were badly damaged and though the rain has now stopped the floods have not completely declined. Anyone who leaves will most likely get injured again and this is the only hospital around. Having catered for the patients injuries the hospital's Medicine was out of stock.
'At the risk of more casualties?'
'What do you want me to do? I'm at a loss Aden. I'm so scared that one of the patients might have tuberculosis. If the results come back positive, do you realize what this means?'
Speechless. That was how I was. He was right. I have been so busy making sure that everyone fits in the hospital and gets at least first aid but I hadn't thought from that perspective. If what he says indeed does come true then everyone here is at a potential risk.
'Anyway, I have to go tend to other patients. If you manage to come up with better plan I'm all ears. By the way the way, the patients you brought in from the accident have all recovered and want to thank you. See you later.' Aaron then left me standing thinking of a solution. Seeing that most of the patients were catered for what is needed most at this moment is my brain. A definite solution.
I ended up suggesting my house. Yes it was a distance from the hospital it would accommodate a number of people. It was better having a comfortable place to lay their head. Maybe all they need is sufficient rest and in no time they would be healed. The food we have is enough for a two to three days. Hopefully by then some patients will be well enough to leave. In the meantime I need to find a job as a plan B in case things don't work out as expected.
In this village among the people whom we roam in the same circles the one I trust the most is Jade. He has had a tough life but eventually made it. I might not agree with some of his methods of doing things but he is an honest man. And a dependable one at that. He runs a club and a garage downtown. I'm not comfortable with working in the club not only because it goes against my current principles but because I really don't want to meet those snobs who think they are above everyone just because they have money. I don't want to insult anyone and the best way is for me to stay at a distance.
