It happened when he was planning to propose to you. The two of you had been being together for the last three years and when Hvitserk finally thought it was his time to settle down and make you his wife, his mother came with the news.
"We have a proposal for a good alliance!"
The Danes were offering alliance for a good marriage to their king's daughter, princess Ranveig. And since they didn't agree with a princess of them being a second wife for any of the elder sons of Ragnar, Hvitserk was the chosen one to marry her, once Sigurd was too young for the pact.
Obviously, he refused on spot! He would be proposing to you soon and making you his wife, there wasn't a way for him to marry another! But his mother insisted they couldn't go back with her word and Hvitserk saw himself forced to accept that unknown woman into his life, under his mother's promise he would be able to marry you as a second wife, at least.
