"Have a great day at school, honey!" My mom hollered from the kitchen.
"I will! I love you!" I hastily responded as I swung my backpack over my shoulder. My mom said I love you back and that was that. The time was now 8:21 and the bus came at 8:25 or so. I sprinted, or speed walked? I don't know, I just headed over to my bus stop, which happened to be my neighbors driveway.
I honestly was done with school even though it had merely been a week or so. I was your average student; I got A's and B's, and I had my small group of friends. Oh and a crush.
Orion. An odd name sure, but he was cute.
I don't know why I liked him. Maybe it was his unique, easy going, and funny personality; or perhaps the untamed blond hair that hung over his eyes. His startling blue eyes that could pierce you and stop you in your tracks. And his slight stutter that made him attractive.
I just knew he was out of my league.
He wasn't popular or anything; people knew him sure but he stuck to a certain group of people. He also came to school every month with a new broken bone.
I talked to him once, when we were paired together on a group project. He was kind, and honest, he always knew how to keep a conversation going. He had a kind smile that light up the room. Fuck. I knew I was too far gone the moment my heart started racing at his presence.
We never really talked much after that. Maybe a few hi's to each other, or a how are you, but it was like a flat coke; It wasn't as sweet or interesting.
I smiled at the thought of him as I listened to my playlist on the bus. My friend, Maya, wasn't here today so I stuck to listening to music.
Maybe today is the day I'll talk to him. The day I can get his phone number. Okay, that's a bit ambitious. Maybe just talking is where I should aim.
I wasn't exactly shy, I was quite outgoing at times, but this is my crush we are talking about. Or thinking about rather. I don't know why I bother correcting myself.
Soon enough, the bus skidded to a sudden halt, meaning either A: We were at the school or B: we almost hit a car.
Turns out it was A.
"Thank god," I muttered. "I was going to die of boredom."
I grabbed my bag and took my headphones out of my ears. I shoved them haphazardly into my bag along with my phone. I slung my backpack over a shoulder and followed single file out of the bus.
Our creepy bus driver said have a good day; If he was expecting a response, he definitely wasn't getting one. My friend claimed he was a pervert, and to be honest I'm pretty convinced.
Any who, I walked towards our school and met a friend on the way.
"Hi Iris!" Rachel joined me in my determined march and was as bubbly as always.
"Hey." I responded, knowing full well that I came off as short and cold.
Not expecting different on a Monday, she didn't take it to heart and asked, "Where is Maya today?"
"Probably another appointment or something, I'm sure she mentioned something about it." I theorized.
"Oh, well that's probably true. How is Orion going?" She said suggestively, knowing full well that I haven't said a word to him.
"The plan is I speak to him today." I said somewhat optimistically.
"That's always the plan, but it never seems to happen."
I know it was all just teasing banter, but I couldn't help being slightly annoyed. I will talk to him someday. I know it.
"Okay, I get it, I'll ACTUALLY speak to him today, happy?"
"Not unless I see it," She smirked. "It has to be more than a hi and a bye you know. Do it in science class, so i'll know you do it."
"Fine." I groaned.
"Fine." She seemed satisfied with this and we walked in silence until we got to our lockers.
